I thought that I should bring a new Jimmy Smith release to people's attention. It is the soundtrack to a movie "La Metamorphose Des Cloportes". I do not believe that this release has ever been on CD before and I know nothing about an original LP including even whether there ever was one. There are 10 tracks with Jimmy on organ, Quentin Warren on guitar and Billy Hart on drums. It is vintage Jimmy and was recorded in September, 1965. It is a European import on Universal, although there is an Emarcy logo on the digipak. The CD contains 5 bonus tracks of previously released material from various Verve CDs. The sound is excellent.

What are the 1965 tracks like? How long are the tracks?

There are 10 tracks varying in length from 2 to 7 minutes. The 10 tracks total nearly 40 minutes. They are all organ, guitar, and drums trio format and represent very much the distinct Jimmy Smith sound. If you like Jimmy Smith, you will like this session.
I cannot find any reference to this session ever being released previously either domestically or in Japan. Possibly in Europe?

Thanks for the tip here grey.
I just ordered this up after seeing your post. Mostly because it contains a couple of cuts from the much maligned 'Monster' album. That was one wacky Smith record that got played quite a bit when I was a kid mainly because of the GoldFinger, Bewitched & Munsters themes. The Rorschach on the cover used to creep me out. I see they have included both "Goldfinger" and "Man with the Golden Arm" as bonus cuts. My favorite song from that session was Jimmy's take on St. James Infirmary! I sure hope the French soundtrack is a keeper. WV

Restless Gun,
The 5 bonus tracks which are an additional 18 minutes are very different than the 10 tracks of the soundtrack. The 10 tracks of the soundtrack sound like the Blue Note Jimmy Smith and the 5 bonus tracks, all from other albums, represent the Verve Jimmy Smith.
Perhaps I am wrong but I cannot find any reference to the Jimmy Smith soundtrack ever being released previously.

Grey,
those 5 are all Oliver Nelson cuts? Kind of looks like that soundtrack might have been better found on a volume of Jazz et Cinema from the Jazz in Paris series. The Smith version of Mission Impossible is truly the best one.

The 5 bonus cuts are from:
1)Any Number Can Win
2)The Cat
3)Livin' It Up
4)Monster
5)Monster
It also contains a booklet on other releases of music from the French cinema.
The CD is 24 bit mastered.
