AMG does not speak highly of this session. I think the parting words of Mr. Steven Loewy are "...a missed opportunity that begs for an encore with a different focus." Not exactly promising.

Anybody heard this before? I saw a used copy the other day and
wasn't sure whether or not to pick it up.

Thanks!!!

Bill

It depends on how big a fan of those involved and how much the used copy is going for. I am not a big fan myself.

A recording that I would Highly recommend that includes both of these two from the same label would be Reggie Workman's Summit Conference. Beside the 3 musicians already mentioned it also includes Andrew Hill & Pheeroan akLaff. There is also Workman's Cerebral Caverns but Hill and akLaff are replaced by Gerry Hemingway & Geri Allen and some others that I can't remember the names of including a Harp player.

Myself I much prefer Summit Conference!

A usually electronics-adverse friend bought their Postcards album and likes it. I see it used from time to time. Got to bring my Walkman along next time.

Thanks Mnytime! I'll have to search for the Workman Summit Conference; it sounds killer!

Can anyone else comment on the Rivers/Priester? Is it a miss like AMG says?

I'll second Mnytime's recommendation of Summit Conferences. That is a great disc.

Howdy,

If it's cheap, I'd pick up the Priester/Rivers. I play it every once in a while and enjoy it. Not earth-shattering, but not everything must be, right?

Tucker Martine adds the electronic flourishes -- if I recall correctly, he does it live, not post-production -- adding a welcome, subtle touch to the recording. The electronics are very warm, not jangly or buzzy or piercing at all. T.M. tends to do a nice job on all the albums he mixes. He works live from the floor, to gorgeous effect, in Wayne Horvitz's Four + 1 Ensemble, which also features Priester (T.M. is the "+1").

Like others, I'll also recommend the other Postcard album, Summit Conference. Very good.

But don't overlook the Priester/Rivers one.
