I'm doing a radio special on Gigi Gryce on Monday, March 24, and Tuesday, March 25, from 3:30-5 p.m. with Michael Fitzgerald, co-author of the new Gryce bio Rat Race Blues . There's a possibility that it will be a two-parter extending into the next day. You can find a link to the station on Mike's home-page:
Fitzgerald (http://www16.brinkster.com/fitzgera/ggbooks.htm)
or here:
WFIU (http://wfiu.indiana.edu/wfiu.ram)
I'll up this thread a day or so before broadcast, but wanted to let Gryce fans and any other interested listeners know about it in advance.

Ghost,
That's very cool, I'm a big fan of Gigi's. The book is great, I bought it on a trip to SanFrancisco awhile back and finished it before I got home.

Thanks for the alert, WCGhost. I'm also quite fond of Mr. Gryce's compositions and playing ("When Farmer Met Gryce" is a disc that I've been spinning very often these days). I got Mike's book last year but haven't gotten around to reading it yet. Looking forward to reading the book and also the radio broadcast!

Thanks for the alert. Mike has really been doing a lot of good things on the jazz scene, with his writing, research, web activities, etc.

Perfect timing! I was just about to start exploring Gryce's work!

Up for broadcast later today. It's now a two-part special and will conclude tomorrow. There's a chance that developments in Iraq could knock music off the air, in which case I'll re-schedule, but I've spoken this morning with the chief announcer, and it appears we're on track for jazz--albeit with an added newsbreak, but still a good 75 minutes today and tomorrow.

Ghost,
Will this be 3:30 Central Time?
Thanks,

Dennis,
Sorry I didn't see this until now. It's actually 3:30 Eastern time. Part 2 airs tomorrow from 3:30-5 and covers 1956 through the rest of Gryce's life. I'll play recordings of Gryce's work by Betty Carter and Oscar Pettiford, about three tracks from the Jazz Lab with Donald Byrd, and several tracks from Gryce's 1960 quintet. Some commentary from Michael Fitzgerald on those tracks and on Gryce's post-musical career as an educator as well.

Hi Ghost,
I'm sorry I've missed your show on Monday. When I tried to tune in on Tuesday, your station was broadcasting Talk of the Nation. Bummer! I was wondering if you will be rebroadcasting the show or if we could get a transcript or tape of the show?
Thanks!
JK :)

Jazzkitten,
Yes, I sadly learned late Tuesday that we had been streaming news all day long over the Internet... and on Monday, too. So only area listeners heard the broadcast. I'm hoping to re-schedule for either May or later this summer and will certainly re-post the information here and on other jazz discussion boards. Thanks for your interest--you might also want to check out this link on Michael Fitzgerald's homepage:
Gryce (http://www16.brinkster.com/fitzgera/ggbooks.htm)
It lists other upcoming broadcasts and/or interviews about Gryce and the book.
