...Oscar Peterson, George Arvanitis, Jacky Byard, and others similar?

Ever since I got into Oscar Peterson and other similar artists, I've wanted to know what type of jazz it is actually catagorised as. I wondered if anyone could inform me, thanks.

Thirty five years ago, the artists you named would have been called "mainstream-modern". But now, with jazz split into what seems like a hundred styles, labels don't seem to do much good. For the artists you named, I guess I'd choose "straight ahead".

I would say Oscar is more be-bop, while Jaki is a combination of so many styles...
