I haven't heard it other than five minutes' worth in Tower which bowled me over. They were sold out. :( Since then, I haven't made a rush to buy it, despite noticing wide-ranging critics' opinions. What do those of you who have this think of it?

I think this is a FINE record. The only criticism I can see against it is that it is a little too eclectic for its own good, but there's a lot of substance here in any event. Excellent writing by Harris, and some Gil Evans-esque arrangements for horns...whether you like it or not, it's an ambitious record no matter what.

I'd have to say it is my CD of the year so far, and I'd say it is the best thing I've heard Harris record. A great recording that repays repeated listening.

after reading some reviews in jazztimes and elsewhere i've become re-interested in harris. when cloud of red dust came out a few years ago i was enthralled, but after repeat listenings i wrote him off as another hutcherson imitator. am i wrong to think that? will this new effort change my opinion of harris?

I didn't like it on my first play, but 6 plays into it, it's really grown on me. I like it a lot. It gets better everytime I listen to it.

I also like this one a lot. I don't have any great insights except to say it's been in heavy rotation since I bought it a couple of weeks ago. And the bassist, Tarus Mateen, really sounds great to me. He's doing a lot of interesting stuff that catches my ear.
