Those japanes BlueNote-Reissues are really a gas. Canīt get enough of it. During this year I ordered a lot of stuff, among them the hard to find Hank Mobley dates from late 1956 - 1957, the three Jutta Hipp albums (At Hickory House Vol. 1 + 2 and the session with Zoot Sims). Few days ago I got 4 great CDs I really enjoy: Horace Silver "Doinīthe Thing", live at the Village Gate, Dizzy Reece "Starbright", Lou Donaldson "LD+3" with the Three Sounds and Jackie McLeans "Demon Dance" (fantastic!). A few years ago all those japanese reissues were mini-LP sleeves, but now they went back to jewel-box format. I just pre-ordered a lot of stuff from the next batch of re-issues in july, august and september, among them something I really need: Elvin Jones "Gettinīit Together", and a great Lou Donaldson album featuring Curtis Fuller "Lou Takes Off". Iīm really spending some money for those CDs.

I've picked up some excellent Blue Notes and other label reissues from Japan
in recent times. There don't seem to be too many fans of Japanese imports
at AAJ, unless they just don't discuss the subject on this board. Most threads
on Japanese releases (during the last 2 years?) seem to have been ignored.
Satin - have you been enjoying the 1500 series ? (and the prices!)

I think part of the problem may be the high prices of Japanese imports. The last time I checked, titles of interest were $35-40 or more, and the releases just weren't that high a priority for me to acquire.

Out of 12,000 plus CDs, I doubt that I own more than 30-50 Japanese CDs.

@ peter rh: Yes, I also noticed there arenīt too many fans of japanes BlueNote on AAJ. But if someone likes to have a complete collection of the classic BlueNote cataloge, the whole 1501-1599 and from 4001 on....he canīt go without the japanese reissues. I also liked the mini LP covers, among them was a batch of reissues about two years ago, with additional tracks, though they werenīt mentioned on the backcover, which the japanese folks keep as originally as possible.
@jazzcritic: When I started to buy japanese BlueNote, they were very expensive, I didnīt know the rite source, but ordering directly from Japan it isnīt expensive. Before I did that, I really spent a lotta money ordering by amazone, tower, mundo etc. And it took many many weeks until I finally got the items. Now if I order, after a week I got it.
Canīt wait to get "Shades of Redd", Iīm sure it is much better than "Reddīs Blues" a previously unreleased session, issued on the Conn Series and somehow weak, cause itīs got a terrible drummer who destroys the whole session, which otherwise got a fast company and nice tunes.

Yesterday I listened again to the wonderful Dizzy Reece album "Starbright" from the latest batch of japanes BlueNote - re-issues. A great album featuring Hank Mobley, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Art Taylor.

I second what SatinDoll says. Ordering directly from Japan is the way to go, and not very expensive at all. The new TOCJ24 reissues only cost 1500 yen, so they are actually cheaper than Connoisseurs!

It's amazing how much the Japanese manage to put out that isn't available in the west. And I'm not only talking about Blue Note, but also the many Verve-owned labels (Verve, Impulse, Argo/Cadet, Mercury etc.) for example. Add to that that Japanese releases generally are high quality products, both in terms of sound and other aspects, that are a joy to have. The notion that Japanese reissues are so expensive I view as nothing more than an old myth that dies hard! If you buy them from amazon.com, yes, but as SatinDoll mentions there are better ways...

@ Swinging Swede: Iīm glad to see thereīs some people who also apreciate those japanese CDs. I think the japanese really are big jazz fans. If someone likes to purchase collectorīs items, this is the best way to purchase.
@ peter rh: Yeah, Mr. Tanno sent me this list. Canīt wait to get Art Taylorīs CD "A.T.īs Delight" and some others of course. Anyway itīs getting hard, because I allready own very much from the BlueNote Cataloge.
