Ciao Audiofiles,
I am looking to upgrade my player ($500 level,thereabouts),and play 90% Jazz-Jazz vocal,some pop-rock.
What's the best player (most musical, open clear mids-highs,detailed)?
Am considering; NAD, Arcam, Cambridge, AMC.
Any tips???
My system:
Denon 1000 AVR (soon to be replaced with a new 1604,1804)
Denon CD changer (changer is on it's last legs!!)
NHT 2.3A speakers

I dig home theater, but music is what counts!
P.S. down the road,I may switch to a tube CD player and hybrid amp
am interested in Jolida products, anyone know them?
Thanks for the help, much appreciated.......... JJ

You need to hear the CD player with your own system. What sounds great in one set up may be biased too much in one direction in another. Most of the units, including the interconnects and speaker cables instil some form of colouration to the sound.

Apart from the above, I can't give any further advice, since the products sold in the US are often different from those sold in the UK, even where they have the same name/model number

I've had Pioneer, Technics, Harmon Kardon, Cambridge Audio, Nakamichi and Dynaco cd players in my system, and now have moved to a tubed-output modified Sony SACD/Universal player from Decware Audio, my favorite audio company (I have their amps and speakers as well, have been using their products for seven years).

A few hundred dollars more than you mention as your goal, but worth considering in my opinion; best machine I've had. . . . Really makes you want to spin disc after disc.

I have the NAD 541i and play primarily Jazz and I am very happy with it.

I think you can pick one up for $300 new as they discontinued it and replaced it with the 542.

I can't quote you on the others but I can quote you on the Cambridge Audio Azur 640 V2, in two words "it sucks". I wish I could of auditioned one before I purchased off internet. I fell for the awesome write ups on it and took a chance. My old Yamaha cdx-910 smoked this player. The Cambridge has a kind of smooth clean sound to it but it only sounds smooth because the details are completely gone, a muffled sound if you will. This player should not have even been picked for hi fi category comparison. Ciao Audiofiles,

"I can't quote you on the others but I can quote you on the Cambridge Audio Azur 640 V2, in two words "it sucks""
Which proves that theres no objective rules, you have to account for taste, space and the rest of your system, because I have a cambridge audio azur CD player and I love it.
Admitedly its the first good CD player I've owned, but I recently got a chance to hear a CD I know very well through the same speakers I own, with good quality NAD seperates, and thought it didn't have as much presence as my system.

Can anybody recommend a decent shelf system (complete with multi-disc player, speakers, subwoofer) that has the old-fashioned EQ levels and not those annoying preset ones?

Look for something by Myryad. They make great mid-priced stuff. If you want open clear mids-highs, detailed, Myryad or Arcam all the way. Arcam is great too. Trust me it is worth spending a little more for a Myryad or Arcam. I use like a late 90's entry level Myryad with B&W Nautilus 804 speakers and it is terrific. I listen to a ton of jazz too, and I'm fussy.

I own the Jolida JD-100 CD player and thoroughly enjoy it. It's a tube player, so you can swap tubes to fine tune it to create greater synergy with your system. It's solidly built and includes a heavy metal remote control. This basic unit is well perceived by the audiophile community, and can be modified with additional $$ down the road into a state of the art player.

Good luck with your search.

I recently obtained a Used @1997 Sony single CD player from a pawn shop for $10.00.....this player easily trumps any multi-CD disc changer I've ever had.....my most recent is the Marantz CC4300 a 2003 model that listed at about $249.00(bought for $169.00). Don't waste your money on multi CD changers. You can find early model(1992-1998) simply designed single CD players in pawn shops and thrift stores for 10-25 dollars.
