most people start with "moving pictures". you can't really go wrong with that one. having been a rush fan since high school (which means i've heard tom sawyer plenty of times for several lifetimes), i'm more inclined to listen to "a farewell to kings" or "hemispheres". their sound changed from guitar-heavy to keyboard-heavy and back again over the years. i'm not sure which would be more appealing to you, so maybe a "best of" cd would be a good starting point.

"Permanent Waves" is my favorite, but "Moving Pictures" is probably an equally good place to start. "Exit Stage Left" is a pretty good summation of the concert experience.

get the Retrospective discs 1 (up to the early 80s) and 2 (early 80s to early 90s), see what you like then go find the individual albums. My advice is to avoid anything from after 82 until the late 90s-they really jumped on the synthesizer craze, and it didn't work. Once they deemphasized the synth around Test for Echo (I think that would be '96), the guitar came back to the front and they regained their form. Everything they did in the 70s and early 80s is essential. Their latest, an EP from June of this year, is very good. It is all covers of songs they played in their early garage-band days. Well worth the $7. Also, they've had many live albums-check out Different Stages, a 3-disc from 98 that covers the just finished tour, but it also has a complete disc of live material from London in the 70s. Great version of Xanadu
