Can anyone recommend a few good Freddy Hubbard albums on Blue Note? Ditto, Art Blakey (I already have 'Moanin.')

Much obliged, bixntran

Don't forget Night of the cookers. Freddie and Lee together slammin on 4 tunes over 2 CD's. yes, it's that hot...

Thanks for your response.

Yes, "Night of the Cookers" really smokes. I have Vol. 1 on vinyl, but not Vol. 2. Thanks for reminding me!

Blakey & the Messengers: Live at Birdland is great, even has the nifty intro by the short dude, Pee Wee something or another.

Blakey - "Ugetsu" & "Caravan" (on Riverside/OJC w/Freddie on trumpet), "Art Blakey!!!!! Jazz Messengers!!!!!" (on Impulse)

Freddie Hubbard - "Hub Cap", "Here to Stay" (not yet on CD)

Other albums w/Freddie:
Eric Dolphy "Out to Lunch" (if you want to hear the "out" side of Hubbard)
Wayne Shorter "Speak No Evil"
Herbie Hancock "Empyrean Isles"

Herbie Hancock "Empyrean Isles"

Empyrean Isles is an interesting album. It features Hubbard without a sax player and he is on cornet. It shows his versatility as he is at home with the hard bop of "One Finger Snap" the funky soul jazz of "Canteloupe Island" and the more free-form "The Egg".

"Hub Cap" is wonderful! "Goin' Up" is another early Blue Note gem. BFrank's other selections are definitely more challenging, but well worth the time.

BTW, "Here To Stay" was briefly available as one of those limited editions in 1995-96, but has not emerged since. If I recall correctly, Freddie and the guys did a few Calvin Massey compositions on that one.

I didn't realize that it had ever been released on CD. I only have the 2-fer LP that was released in 1976 with "Hub Cap". Well, it certainly SHOULD be re-released as either an RVG or Conn.

BTW, it does have 2 Calvin Massey pieces - "Father and Son", "Assunta".

Art Blakey:
Free For All
Indestructible
The Freedom Rider
Freddie Hubbard
Bolivia
Breaking Point
Bolivia, from 1990, is a red hot blowing date featuring Ralph Moore and Vincent Herring, who were just getting to be known at the time. Okay it's not on Blue Note (I'm cheating) but Hub was playing well into the early '90's and Bolivia is the proof.
