Anyone have any ideas on who instigated the slogan "Bird Lives"?
We have two candidates: Chips Bayard and Ted Joans
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Don't know about the Bayard association, only Joans. Can you enlighten me?

I was under the impression it first appeared as Graffiti in the NYC subways.

Yes, we are talking about claims of authorship.

I also read that Ted Joans coined the phrase.

He says so himself -

Nice rap for Ted..."I was behind the graffiti."

Thanks everyone. I will go with Ted Joans for now. We did an interview with Ted for a local (Mexican) magazine and did not want to be completely wrong about "Bird Lives"

The other candidate Chips Bayard was the manager for Bird and only one source thinks it might have been him. I will trust Ted on this one.

Again Thanks

The leading historian on Charlie Parker is Phil Schaap, he works at WKCR, Columbia university. If anyone would know, he would. The station is 89.9 FM, it is also available on the Internet.

There is a track called "O.D." by Lightnin' Rod with Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Miles that has "Bird Lives" in the lyrics. It is a song about a heroin overdose.

And if he doesn't have the answer, he'll readily make something up. He does this all the time/

Regarding Phil Schaap, I'm not sure about "historian" but he does know a lot about Bird and his show is very useful, esp. to beginners. However, there is some truth to what Chris says. Not everything can be taken at face value. I've had this mentioned to me by a couple of people who are in the business.

And when not everything can be taken at face value, whatever remains comes under suspicion.
