Hi There -

I was hoping perhaps someone on this forum could help me with something.

A few years ago I was traveling, and as usual, I was checking out the local record shops. While I was browsing in a small indie shop, one of the staff was playing a record that really caught my ear. It was definetly an old recording. The music was a very quirky and catchy mix of jazz, bebop and swing. The vocalist was the real centerpiece, obviously. She had quite a range and her sound was very manic and quirky as well, but still very catchy and warm. At times she sounded a bit "dizzy" or betty boop-ish, but overall she was a very solid pop vocalist with an incredible knack for quick scales. It was all very hip, upbeat and very catchy. My ear is not trained in this genre at all, but I got the feeling that this music was recorded between 1930 and 1960. It sounded closer to the 30s, but it also had a very "hip", "mod" and "Swinging" flair to it at times that made me think of the sixties.

If anyone on this forum has an inkling who this might have been, I would love to hear your thoughts. Maybe someone could point me in the right direction...?

thanks!

If whe sounded black it was probably Ella Fitzgerald. If she sounded white it was probably Annie Ross or Anita O'Day.

It could be anybody, of course. I recommend that you go to amazon.com and listen to the records of those named above and Sarah Vaughn. You might recognize the voice.
