Nat Hentoff, in his column Nat Hentoff's Final Chorus, on http://jazztimes.com has some reflections on the future of jazz that I find quite interesting. Recommended reading.

Nothing is more instructive-- or humbling-- than to read any book more than 10 years old on the "future of..." whatever- jazz, art, reading, stocks, etc etc. Typically, such works issue dire predictions and concerns. It's a perennial genre of writing. It's usually a waste of time. NO ONE knows what the future will bring. That simple.

Of course no-one KNOWS. In spite of that, reflections can be interesting reading. And Hentoff's column is not about jazz going in one direction or another.
