....Wynton Marsalis' wife is the actress who plays opposite Dick Van Dyke in that crime show. Can't remember her name now. She was on a soap for a while.

Wes Montgomery's grandson, Anthony Montgomery plays Travis Mayweather on the UPN series "Enterprise" (the prequel to Star Trek) besides doing quite a bit of other work in television. Maybe not over the top famous, but we're proud of him here at home. (and for the ladies out there he is quite a honey....)

Pyeng Threadgill is Henry Threadgill's daughter. She recorded a good album last year, of the songs of bluesman Robert Johnson.
Neneh Cherry is Don Cherry's stepdaughter. She was a promising solo artist with some albums under her own name. I've lost track of what she's been doing lately.
Nas, a hip hop artist of renown, is Olu Dara's son.

This has been an especially fun thread :) . But apart from some of the larger number jazz families - Cole, Marsalis, Brubek, Heath, Jones, Pizzareli - are there any three generation jazz families? My brain is a little off, a little tired too, but I'm sure there must be a three generation family that I can't think of. What am I not remembering?

Harry Connick, Jr.'s father was the District Attorney of New Orleans (or something like that).

Lenny Kravitz' parents were both in the TV industry. His mother was an actress on The Jeffersons and his father was a producer.

Grachan's were grandfather and son, the older a remarkable bassist. The other. . . not one of my favorite trombonists. :indiff:

How about Clarence Williams the pianist/entrepreneur (ripoff king?) and Clarence Williams III the actor (who must have had a lot of fun playing Jelly Roll in that great movie!)

3 generations:
Roy Haynes
Graham Haynes
Roy's grandson (name escapes me at the moment) is playing drums in Vijay Iyer's group on the new Savoy CD.
I believe that's all correct.
Please correct if I've screwed this up.

Addendum: I looked it up. Roy's grandson's name is Marcus Gilmore.

I also read a program note for a Roy Haynes concert in which Roy said that another one of his sons played drums for a long time with Sun Ra. I can't figure out who that would be, but some of the Sun Ra musicians adopted unusual names.

I used to play tennis with the not-so famous niece of Jake Hanna.

In 1978-79 she worked in the office of my then girl friend whom I later married. Since she didn't play the game she introduced me to the girl and we'ed occasionly hit tennis balls back and forth. No physical contact in this sport.

Yeah, Harry Sr. was DA of New Orleans for quite some time. He is also a singer that worked quite a bit through the 90's, but has been a little out of the scene lately. Probably enjoying retirement.

I think it's Harry Jr.'s brother that is DA in Jefferson Parish (New Orleans suburbs).

Jeroen de Valk, author of a biography on Ben Webster, has suggested that there may be ties between Abe Lincoln and Ben Webster. It's a painful and unconfirmed story that involves (I believe) Lincoln's father and a slave-woman. In the Dutch edition of De Valks book there was a picture of Abe Lincolns supposed halfbrother (and Webster's great-uncle, great-grandfather, whatever) and the similarity was striking...

Chicago based pianist Dick Marx spawned the dreaded Richard Marx. (Begin humming "Rosemary's Baby" theme here). Imagine that your Dad's hipster credentials include playing on Ken Nordine albums, and you in turn go on to produce a catalog of generic pop-rock. Oh well, he probably made way more money than his Dad ever dreamed of...

Chet baker played with a pianist who was Mussolini's son.

The story goes that the night before they first met. an agent told Chet he had a gig the next day with Romano Mussolini.
"You mean, the dictator's son?" he asked.
"Yeah," said the agent.
"But what will I say to him?" asked Baker.
"Just act naturally. He's just another guy."
So the next day, when the two were introduced, Baker shook Mussolini's hand and (allegedly) said, "Glad to meet you, but I'm sorry to hear about your old man."

TS Monk, the very vibrant drummer, singer, and highly talented performer who happens to the be son of Thelonious--very different but equally joyous to hear and see.

Many years ago I worked with Frank Rosolino's niece. Wonderful gal.
And in case you're wondering -- I'm the son of LeRoy Wuolu from Oakes, North Dakota. :dill:

C. Williams III is the grandson of Eva Taylor (love her voice/singing) and Clarence Williams.

IMO, 1900 is a good movie but perhaps they should have accorded Jelly Roll a little more respect? :(
