James Carter's style is just great!
Miles' clothes, hmm, well, at times they got real hard to look at...
Out of the guys I've seen, Jason Moran's Bandwagon is one of the most classy dressed bands. The time I've seen them, Tarus Mateen wore a flashing white shirt, Moran was in his usual outfit, and Nasheet went all dark, so they were quite complimentary :)

Sweet Lowdown. i just watched that one again the other night for like the 20th time. great, great movie.

Yep, great one. The theme of the beautiful artist who can't function in real life is a bit stereotypical, and tried several times by Woody Allen, but just so well executed and touching here. I guess it always depends on the performance whether you buy an old favourite or not...

Yes, I have a great photo of Roy, taken at one of the jazz festivals in St Louis, Senegal, and he does look splendido. Pity there's no way of scanning it and putting it into a thread.

Sat up close and stood up close and it was Miles without a doubt. I saw him in all manner of dress, except for his last phase. Expensive everything, nothing over the top, just casual elegance, and I mean elegance, and to boot, his clothes fit perfectly, never a wrinkle. From the best looking suits, to fabulous houndstooth jackets worn with either a beautiful dress shirt, sports shirt or with with an ivory silk turtle neck or a fine Italian knit wool one, no one every looked better in what they wore, and his shoes, the leather in them was fabulous. To this day I love a top quality Benedictine leather. Shoot, I was a girl and I envied him. He even knew how to wear his cowboy clothes. No dude duds for him. He looked great, and when I saw him in satins & beads, with long hair, I about lost it. I thought I was seeing things. Nope earlier on, it was Miles. Of course I never saw Duke Ellington. Wasn't he something?

Wynton Marsalis and James Carter.

Wynton reminds me of how Dizzy dressed, the silk suits and all. Not later on with Dizzy, but when I was seeing him play.

I enjoyed Jackie McClain's gangter look, that's what we kids called it. Thin as a rail, but he had a presence, liked his look as well as his music.

Yeah, here's to Jackie Mac! The only thing sharper than his suits was his intonation!

Saw him several times in New Orleans at Snug Harbor & I would say Wes 'Warm Daddy' Anderson. He expects his band to be 'Jazz clean'(as he says) also.

CANNOT BELIEVE that nobody has mentioned Milt Jackson or Hank Jones on this thread. It beggars belief! They have always dressed like goddammed Ambassadors!
Dexter Gordon will always be quoted as a standard, of course, but so should all the members of the MJQ (Percy Heath - I mean to say!!!!!!!!!!!!).
Joe Wilder, Frank Wess and Jackie Williams have always struck me as imacculate. John Bunch too. And Kenny Barron and Ben Riley are obvious candidates. Joe Wilder perhaps outstanding.
And I really do not see how Kenny Garrett is being mentioned AT ALL (I've even seen him on the bandstand in jeans for Chrissakes), I mean AT ALL!
Also, for the suggested poll, above, it really is Ahmad Jamal by miles and miles and miles - surely (isn't Roy Haynes' style terribly flamboyant?). And doesn't James Carter dress like a gay fashion-model?
And I hastily endorse the ridicule for Pat Metheny's "style".
Is Wynton sometimes a little ostentatious? (Not sure - but sometimes...). Oscar Peterson definitely tended to ostentation.................discretion is an important element in this.
Amongst younger guys, it's Peter Washington, hands down. (Sean Smith does good work too).
Oh yeah - Clifford Jordan was some dresser. Wow! And Tete Montoliu too (and he was blind, it's always intriuged me how he maintained the level he did with such outstanding consistency). Cedar Walton. And Ron Carter, although maybe a little flashy... not sure... Great suits, though.

This seems relevent (esp to those commenters who are saying that this thread is meaningless - or of no relevence to "the music"):

ORNETTE COLEMAN ON HOW HE DRESSES:

Your music is beautiful, but you also dress beautifully. Explain your interest in clothes.

Coleman: "It seems to me that in the western world, culture has something to do with appearance. A person that's out creating good stuff has got to appreciate someone when they take the time to have an appearance that goes with what they're doing. It just makes that person feel that what his work is is going to be more valid. But who wants to see a guy standing in front, looking like a bum, doing something that a bums don't do? This don't make sense.

It's not that I think that everything has to be uniform, but I think that having an appearance that someone can appreciate without you being bourgeois or a snob has got to make a person feel good in your company, especially if you are a nice person. I basically like to have an appearance, first, that is harmless, and, secondly, that is interesting to see. It makes people more comfortable, or it makes people more sensitive about themself in relationship to what it is they want to ask you."

Jon Hendricks. Don't forget about his bespoke suits! I can do without the bowler hat indoors. But other than that he's "sharp as a rat turd! That's sharp on both ends." At least, that's what Hendricks always says.

Wynton has quite the closet as well. Other well dressed cats (that are living) would include composer/arranger David Berger, saxophonists Jason Marshal and Mark Gross. I would put myself in that category but I've grown too fat for much of my wardrobe.

Like Hank Jones and Milt Jackson (see above, #55), Kenny Burrell, of course, is quite an obvious contender too.

And, please, voters/members, could we do something about the poll, above, that actually places Kenny Garrett and the garish James Carter above AHMAD JAMAL (a legendary dresser)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I mean to say).
