Hi there,

I'm new to this forum.

I am looking to buy a live Miles Davis CD as a present, but really don't know which one to get, so I would be grateful for any recommendations you knowledgeable folks could give me.

I did check out a record store, and in the recommended section they had Live at the Filmore East, but then I had a look in the Miles Davis section and there were a *lot* of CDs!

Many thanks,
Steve.

Depends on what you want. Live at the Fillmore East is a monster of a record. But, it's Miles caught in the embryonic stages of his fusion phase. If that's what you want, then get it, because it's a killer.

If you were hoping for a good straight ahead jazz record, THE album to get is The Complete 1964 Concert. It's got the slow tunes for lovin' your woman, it's got the fast tunes to boggle one's brain, and it'g got the mid tempo tunes to just chill out with.

Miles at Newport and Jazz at the Plaza are both excellent, and a great snapshot of the first quintet/sextet years.

Steve, You might also want to check out "The Complete Live at The Plugged Nickel" (Columbia Legacy 66595, 1995).

The aforementioned 64 double live album and the Plugged Nickel box are both awesome. There's also a 'highlights' of the Plugged Nickel box which might be a more inexpensive place to start.

As far as electric Miles, there are so many. The recently issued "It's About That Time" is killin'
