Jazz related : Ron Jarzombek - Solitary speaking of theoretical confinemt. A album in which every song is created with different limitations and musical ideas. Like using his sites IP number to create a song or base a song around a number like 5.
"All quintuplets, in 5/4 time, 5 measures per phrase. The scale used in the first theme (:00 and :36) is B Major (5 sharps), the 2nd theme (:18 and :54) uses Db Major (5 flats). Also, there are only 5 pitches used for each theme. "
The music is great though and stands on its own very well.

Non Jazz releated : Immolation - Unholy Cult, Very dark atmosphere with lots of layers and dynamics and the best vocals since Lord Worm.

"Footprints Live" was my choice but your ballot should have included Dave Douglas, "The Infinite" and Von Freeman, "The Improvisor", which were my choices for #2 and #3. Rounding out my Top 5, Gene Ammons & Sonny Stitt, "God Bless Jug And Sonny" and Branford's "Footsteps".

I completely forgot about "The Infinite"......Freeman maybe too, but keep in mind I only had 10 spots to work with.
Dunn about Ammons/Stitt though. If we believe in the future of this music, can't have reissues getting attention at expense of current records....this has been a problem in the past.

Actually I didn't consider Jug & Sonny a reissue because the material was a previously unissued concert from the Left Bank Jazz Society, It's best classified by critic Bill Shoemaker's term, "archival release", I suppose. Great CD by any name, though. If not Jug & Sonny, I'll move "Footsteps" up to #4 and add Cyrus Chestnut's "Soul Food" as #5 by virtue of its mind-bending James Carter solos.

We need more votes here folks! The editors told me they will factor participation of this poll into their picks of 2002 (if participation is significant enough that is.)

Some of the picks up top are excellent (Bill Carrothers-Duets with Bill Stewart), though I'm not sure all deserve poll mention. Here are a few more solid releases:
John Hollenbeck - Quartet Lucy
Moutin Reunion Quartet - Power Tree
Dom Minasi - Takin' The Duke Out
William Parker - Raining on the Moon
Mario Pavone - Mythos
Trio Da Paz - Café
Steve Lantner - Saying So
David Manson - Fluid Motion

BTW that Parker album is a pile. Critics will write his shit down even if they haven't really bothered to listen to it.

I should have clarified: those vocals are just whack. But which discs don't you feel should have been included in the poll anyway? Please enlighten us...

I'm an asshole. "Inside Out" is from 2001. Tj e new record is called "Always Let Me Go." Well, I hope you knew what I meant.....

For those who busted William Parker's "Raining On The Moon", try last year's "O'Neal's Porch". It has no vocals, thank God, the tunes are hip, it swings hard. I agree the vocals on "Raining" sucked, at best, but "Porch" is really great. If you haven't heard it, give it a shot. Besides, Parker's a great bassist any way you slice it, IMHO.

Patricia Barber - "Verse" :)
I found several on the Riverside, Prestige, Pablo 20-bit remastered re-issues that came out this year (www.fantasyjazz.com) much more interesting and rewarding than most of the new recordings.

I don't rant too much so permit me: Stop ignoring Von Freeman! "The Improvisor" is a great CD. Vonski forever! Also welcome to markvi who I know from another board. Generally speaking this one is very civil even when things get heated.

clifton-thanks. the atmosphere sure is nice hear. pharoahrock-randy sandke's "inside out" was 2002. jazz times just ranked it #10 for the year and a lot of the critics picked it in their top ten. i'm listening to it now. he's a very gifted trumpeter and writer.
