January 8, 1949 was the day on which drummer, BOBBY WORTH was born in London.
Worth [Robert Dodsworth] took up drums, having been inspired by Mel Lewis and Morello and by the time he was sixteen he was involved in founding the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. He then played resident for Bert Rhodes at London's Talk Of The Town. Worth followed that experience with freelancing in a variety of contexts and with many British players, including Pete King, Don Weller and Jim Mullen. Visiting American players were also backed by Worth, such as Bob Wilber, Buddy Tate, Kenny Davern, Charlie Byrd and Scott Hamilton. He also was drummer/musical director for Buddy Greco. In addition to all that, Worth was involved in theatre shows, such as Sugar Babies, with Mickey Rooney and Ann Miller. He appears regularly at Ronnie Scott's Pizza Express and 606 Club as well as travelling all over Britain. He was with the British production of Lady Sings The Blues, as well as with the Alex Welsh Reunion Band. In 1998 the award for Drummer Of The Year, a British Telecom award, went to BOBBY WORTH. Warm lager, in the air, to the great BOBBY WORTH!!!! :smokin: :smokin: |

MARILYN MAZUR
Great pictures, EKE BBB!!! One small point. I have Marilyn Mazur bursting into the world on Jan 18, not the 8th. But, no matter. MARILYN MAZUR was born in New York and not only is a master of percussion, but also plays the piano, sings and is a composer. She is the child of Danish and American parents and was raised in Denmark until she was six years old. The seventies found Marilyn working as a dancer with several dance groups, as well as as a pianist.. She then played drums and sang with bands, including the Feminist Improvising Group. She followed that by leading her own all-women music-theatre group, Primi Band in 1982-1984. She collaborated with John Tchicai and Pierre Dorge. She then worked with Miles Davis on Aura in 1985, touring for nine months. She then worked with Gil Evans in 1986 and Wayne Shorter in 1987. In 1989 Marilyn returned to Denmark to lead her own groups, Future Song and Pulse Unit, in which her husband, Klavs Hovman plays bass. The list of her musical associations goes on, with Mathias Ruegg, Charlie Mariano and Jan Garbarek. Marilyn is eternally curious and she possesses and incorporates a variety of exotic instruments, as well as playing excellent kit drums. As for her style, she says, "Obviously the music contains jazz, rock and ethnic elements, but it is none of them - and does not try to be." I've listened to her collection, "Circular Chant" [1994 Storyville] and am most impressed. Aquavit, in the air, to MARILYN MAZUR!!!! :smokin: :smokin: |

Well here it is. 2003 closes and 2004 opens. An arbitrary dividing line to be sure. Wouldn't the longest / shortest day have made more sense? Or how about the first day of Spring - That would have been really suitable. At least it doesn't cause as much trouble as arbitrary lines on maps! At the time of writing, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, China and all points Westward towards the Central Asiatic Republics will have seen the dawn of a new year. Western Alaska will be last. If there are still some miracles around, may everyone have a better 2004 than their 2003 - it's a start BTW Congrats on the Firework Display Australia. Movin' on to January 9, we have the trumpeter, JIMMY MAXWELL'S original debut, into a family of brass-players, in 1917.
Jimmy started playing his trumpet at four years old and never looked back. He was taught by a string of legendary American brass-players, including Herbert Clarke, over a period of about ten years. Maxwell is not only a superb musician, but has become a teacher of what can only be described as guru-like and he has been sought out by dozens of well-known players. Jimmy Maxwell is considered to be a world authority on trumpet-playing and he is a fine leader and wonderful soloist. Throughout his long career, he has worked with the young Gil Evans, Jimmy Dorsey, Benny Goodman and the list goes on. After his military service, he was the musical director for the Perry Como Show, as well as the early Tonight Show, as well as working as a sub on famous big bands. In the 1960's Maxwell was with Gerry Mulligan, Quincy Jones, Goodman and many others. In the 1970's he was heard intermittantly with the New York Repertory Company, touring Europe with them and with Dick Sudhalter's New California Ramblers. As he rolled into the 1980's Maxwell was still leading his own band, as well as publishing his trumpet manual, "The First Trumpeter". A truly phenomenal career!! Champagne, guys, in the glass, in the air to JIMMY MAXWELL!!! :smokin: :smokin: |
