Pat Martino
Heard Pat Martino's quintet in DC a few weeks ago. The piano player is a kid from NYC named Frank LoCrasto. This kid is great. Does anyone know anything about him?

Dan Morgenstern has agreed to guest on CUW, maybe later this month. We’re coordinating schedules now.

Aside from Morgenstern, are there any tentative or sured up guests participating soon? |
Russ Gershon of Either/Orchestra is interested in guesting. It’s a matter of scheduling now... Unfortunately (for us, that is) Dan’s an amazingly busy man and his finding a reasonable block of time is no small feat. Hang tight!

Shawn - One direction CUW might do well to explore is a veteran musician, perhaps someone who was in on the beginnings of the avant-garde or the AACM. Wouldn't it be cool o get Archie Shepp? Or Grachan Moncur III, Roscoe Mitchell, or Bobby Bradford? Other veterans who could be interesting: Harold Mabern (he's played with everybody), James Moody, Terry Gibbs. Good idea? Bad idea?

All good suggestions, clifton.
I’ve noticed that the older the musician, the less likely they are to be interesed in internet features... still, that’s no excuse not to try, right? |
Shawn: As in all of life, the answer is, go for it.

Pat Martino and Parcode
Parcode i don't know much about the young pianist. There are many great passionate players around today who will fall by the wayside. it is really unfortunate that politics play such a large role in the jazz music game today.
I remember Pat Martino with Jack McDuff's band right after his two classic Live recording's on the Prestige label. Jack was using George Benson in those days. We all know that George went on to become much more popular than his mentor Jack McDuff. Pat Martino is one of the unsung giants who will pass away into oblivion as if he never lived. This is a great pity. Pat Martino is a giant of jazz. He is a survivor who at least has enough sense to place value on other things besides jazz. Notwithstanding he is a great player worthy of more recognition. However jazz music is not supported and simply falls away from its rightful place amongst the worlds great music. Brahms, Rhapsody in B Minor, Op 79 No1 played by Glenn Gould is thrilling to me, however so is a good Pat Martino solo. Which of the two will last the longest time in history. Pat has made great contributions to world music, yet he will be just a bump on the road to glory. What a pity!! |
