Gary Giddins Has a New Book: Weather Bird: Jazz at the Dawn of its 2nd Century

I was reading my Times this a.m. and Barnes and Noble ran an ad listing all the writers who will be "reading" at their NYC bookstores this month. On Nov. 18 Gary Giddins will be reading from what I assume is a new book called "Weather Bird: Jazz at the dawn of its Second Century."

I don't know if this is "new" writing or a collection of his "Village Voice" articles. It should be interesting.

My Christmas list is getting longer, with Doug Ramsey's Desmond bio (I don't know when it is due), the new Dan Morgenstern book and now the new Giddins.

Word of a new book by Gary Giddins is always good news to me! Another addition to my books to buy list as well...

Yes - there will probably be 12 articles about Sarah Vaughan and another 10 on Rosemary Clooney - and than repeated over again - plus a David Murray -

This doesn't surprise me. I am looking forward to the Morgenstern tome.

The Morgenstern and Giddins books just went on my holiday gift list. Now if I can get time to read them.

I enjoyed Visions of Jazz and will more than likley pick up Giddins' new one as well, but this funny and true:

Rerad the review John, not long after reading extended interview on jerryjazzmusician site. I only became familiar with Giddins thru Jazz Times, but I rank him as one of the best music writers (regardless of genre). I'm gonna try to get Weatherbird

I picked up Weatherbird over the holidays (thanks Dad!) and haven't been able to put it down, despite the fact that I was already familiar with some of the writing from the original publication in the VV. However, I had never seen his review of Ribot's Don't Blame Me , titled "Monk with Frets" before, and, imo, it might be the best piece of writing re: the talented guitarist I've ever had the pleasure of reading.
