Who is not in your collection?--part 2
I threatened to do this some time back. Who of the listed choices don't you have in your collection? Why? Once again I've tried to list a reasonably broad spectrum of musicians in the hopes of encouraging discussion.
I've also brought up the original thread for those who may not have seen it the first time around. Ed |
I'll fess up: Breuker, Coleman, Murray, and Vaughan. I'll hold off on why for the moment.
Ed |
Art Ensemble, Breuker, Calloway, Cole, Garbarek, Ibrahim, and Murray.
|
Art Ensemble, Breuker, Coleman, Garbarkek, Miller, Murray, Reinhardt, Vaughan.
I do have individual songs on compilations by several of them, but no albums. |
I've got a half-dozen Vaughan albums (and perhaps 75 more where she's on a cut or a 'sideman', but, relative to the size of my collection, that's zero.
|
From the above musicians, only Gloin Muller gets no representation in my collection. And it's ok like that. I don't even care to learn how to type his name correctly.
|
No AEC, Jan Garbarek, Breuker, Murray, Ibrahim and Glenn Miller.
I'm considering getting a sampling of the first and certainly a box set of Miller's Air Force band. On the rest, I simply haven't explored much jazz post 60s. Maybe in a few years. Oh, and I have no Albert Ayler. ;) |
I have nothing from that list but AEC, Ornette, Sonny Rollins, Art Blakey, Chet Baker, Dolphy, and Andrew Hill.
|
1. Willem Breuker (never heard of him - should I be ashamed ?)
2. Jan Garbarek, David Murray (not interested...) 3. Art Pepper; Dexter Gordon :embarass: (Pretty soon, pretty soon.....) |
The only one who's not in mine is Cab Calloway - I suppose because that period/style of jazz doesn't interest me much.

I would argue,(without really trying to change the direction of this thread), that ,IMO, jazz as popular music lost ground when entertainers like Cab Calloway and Fats Waller faded from the scene. |
As one who is feverishly trying to grow a fledling collection, I'm a little embarassed to say that there are many in that list that are not repped. I did recently add a Chet Baker (Love Songs compilation) after hearing and viewing much material about him; Sonny rollins (my official favourite tenor) I have only by way of Max Roach/Clifford Brown quintet compilation but that I will rectify in short order. I love vocalists (Sarah et al) but love the players much more, so those I'll add over time.
|
AEC, Breuker, Art Farmer, Garbarek, Murray
Breuker is the only one I really don't know. I'd be interested about some Garbarek-stuff, but I'm sure I can't just buy any Garbarek album cause then it'll be likely its the Garbarek I dont like. I want the other Garbarek :) Art Farmer is high on my to-discover-list but atm I have no idea where to start with him. And my to-discover-list is huge :) I was curious if there was Glenn Miller in my collection and there is; i've got "In The Mood" on some old popular-jazz collection :) I'm not too interested in David Murray but I only heard prejudices, never got the chance to make my own opinion. Someday, maybe ... |
chet baker
willem breuker (unless you count a tape of a radio special on the i.c.p. orchestra. he's on one or two of the tunes on that tape) cab calloway (does the blues brothers movie count?) jan garbarek abdullah ibrahim art pepper sarah vaughan |
Art Ensemble of Chicago? Never heard of them, as I've only got about 120 CD's so I haven't bought everyone I enjoy.
But definatly NOT! Kenny G, Dave Koz, and that awfal "Rainforest" tune- no smooth crap for me. :soapbox |
