    Effects for the sax

I just wondered if anyone have some tips on effects like pedals and so on for use for effects on the saxophone?

Listen to Michael Brecker on "Heavy Metal Be Bop", he uses a nice Wah and a pitch-adder (mostly octave) kind of effect. Very nice effect.

There are folks like John Zorn who don't even need electronics to get the fanciest kinds of sounds out of their horn - a listen to the right stuff will help.

I used to use a Mutron which is an Envelope follower, like an automatic Wah Wah. I also had an old Vox octavider and a ring modulator. The thing about those type of effects is that you need a pick up. Mine was a clip-op with an adaptor soldered on to the neck. I did use an old Boss Chorus (also great for Rhodes) with a microphone.

Probably one of the first guys to put an effects pedal on a sax was Ian Underwood in the Mothers of Invention. Listen to Uncle Meat (track is King Kong) or Hots Rats (Frank Zappa). Think it was just wah wah but at times it sounded like a ring modulator. This is 1969/1970 so I think he was the first, don't think I heard Coleman Hawkins using a wah wah pedal. Also, I think Lol Coxhill used wah wah or something on some tracks on Ear of Beholder again 1971-ish.

Sony Stitt and Eddie Harris played a Varitone, which was an electric Mark VI , in the 60´s.

we had a bari player in our band that had a boss wah/octave pedal and he got some wicked sounds with it. I think octave and delay effects sound great w/ sax.
