Johnny Hodges 1951-55 MOSAIC lp set question

    Hey people,

Does anyone have the discography to the Complete Johnny Hodges 1951-55 MOSAIC LP set. I'd like to try and hunt this material down. I don't have an lp player (I know...I know...I'm not a real jazz fan, whatever you say), but I'm trying to gather together his work for my listening pleasure.

    Thanks for the help,

    Carl

Here you go. This material was out on cd also on Blue Moon cds (Fresh Sounds) which may or may not be around to find. Also I bet that within a few years Chronological Classics will have them all out.

I don't think you can go wrong with a Johnny Hodges recording . . . I mean if you like one. . . you'll likely like them all.

Even the one with Lawrence Welk! Well maybe . . . (I do!)

    The Mosaic set(s) . . . excellent.

Thanks a million for the info. I have the second Hodges set, and I can't get enough of it. And with this discograpgy, I'll be hunting down more treasures.

Now, if I can just convince Mosaic to make a Ben Webster set...

    Thanks again,

    Carl

Ah, don't we have all those already?

Now a beautiful thing would be a Mosaic of the complete recordings of the beautiful Una Mae Carlisle. There's some possibly unissued Columbia recordings from the end of her recording career that I would like to see get some hearing, and I'd like to see her work get more exposure.

Just a pipe dream of mine though; I've suggested this years ago to Scott Wenzel about the time of his first sets that he produced. . .and nothing's likely to ever come of it!

Well, if there's unissued stuff still. . . Then I want a "Ben Webster Mosaic Select"! (Just don't want to have to rebuy all those sessions just to get unreleased ones).

Wouldn't it be brilliant if FINALLY Mosaic could release (for the first time in CD form) all those great Verve mid-'60s albums that Rab did with Wild Bill Davis, Grant Green, Earl Hines, Lawrence Brown etc? I have (I think) all of them on vinyl but it's a crime that they have never come out on CD. Someone said it had something to do with a contract in France. Is that true? Any hope of this ever being resolved so we can hear them on CD with the sound cleaned up, and extra takes?

There are/were a few of these on cd from France. But yeah, I'm with you.

Even would like to see the "Plays Pretty" on cd in America, etc. The two Mosaic sets far from represent his total output for the label!

Under whose name were these recordings released? I heard about these before and definitely have to try and find some copies for my collection.

All are under Johnny's name, dating from between 1963-68. Naturally the small group sessions (those with Grant Green or Lawrence Brown or Wild Bill Davis) are the best. There are a couple of so-so big band dates with some fairly commercial tune choices. Most of the tracks are short, but now and then the guys are allowed to stretch out for 6-7 minutes on a blues or an Ellington tune.

In all there were perhaps 8 or 9 LPs issued, all on Verve. I think I have them all on the old vinyl but the series really needs to be reissued on Mosaic to clean up the sound and provide any alternate takes. I was once told that some contract involving France was the hold-up. Surely this box set would sell extremely well if this contract matter could be resolved.

    1955 Mood Ingigo session

Anyone know what the length of the "Mood Indigo" on the Mosaic box mentioned above (1955 session issued on "Perdido" LP) is?

I've got a 6:21 version on a compilation, and I can't pinpoint it's origin. I do know that it's the same take featured on Verve's "Jazz 'Round Midnight: The Ellington/Strayhorn Songbook" CD (listed as 6:18) released a few years back.

The sound quality and ensemble sound right - and the label is right ("Perdido" was issued on Norgran, later by Verve). Just don't know for sure, not having either the Mosaic box or Verve CD.

Like Lonson said in an earlier post, most of these tracks are now available on the French Chronological Classics label. A quick troll through Amazon yielded:

Johnny Hodges & His Orch: 1951-52

    and

Johnny Hodges & His Orch: 1952-54

Not sure if '55 trax have been released yet.

But these are much less $$$ than you're gonna pay for a used Mosaic set.
