I can't speak for Candid but for some reason or other the Tomkins release(s) have been delayed.

As they say on the TV news....more when we have it!

Interesting news Simon, and thanks. Strange that the latest releases from the Tubbs stable have been on vinyl. I would have thought this was a more expensive medium than rattling out copies on CD. Glad I still have my turntable.

No, despite exactly the same repertoire the new Gearbox LP dates from February 21st 1962 and was recorded at St. Hilda's studio, Maida Vale. I talk about Terry Henebery's desire to repeat the success of the earlier programme in my sleeve notes.

The December 13th broadcast (recorded Piccadilly Studios December 11th) was aired on BBC Jazz Session whilst the February '62 session was recorded for the BBC's Jazz For Moderns transcription service.

The personnels are similar except the later session has Harry Klein on baritone, adds Bobby Pratt on trumpet and David Snell on harp and features the rhythm section of Beck, Logan and Ganley.
The earlier set has the Shannon, Clyne and Eyden rhythm section and Ronnie Ross on baritone.

The December 1961 session (introduced by John Dankworth) has also done the rounds as a download.

Both the Tubbs and Joe Harriott BBC Jazz for Moderns on Gearbox vinyl are now in stock at Sister Rays, Berwick Street. You save a few quid if you buy them in person there.

Not if you live 200 miles away from London, you don't. Train fares are quite expensive you know.

Or New York, I guess. Picked up both the Tubbs and Harriott. First new vinyl I've bought for years. didn't know what 180gm vinyl meant but I do now. It's the very heavy vinyl that early LPs albums were pressed on and, I believe, more commonly US pressed ones. Weird that only Sister Ray sells this and via their Amazon site. I would have thought even HMV would have been interested.

Voodoo on Emusic

I noticed the other day that the Voodoo tracks from Dr Terror's House of Horrors, recently released as an EP on the Trunk label are now available on Emusic.

It seems that all of Alan Barnes' Woodville catalogue is also now available on there. This means both of Simon Spillett's albums now are available.

Is there any chance that these Tubby Hayes LPs will also be released on CD? Not all of us have record players any more.

I'm with you Paul. Whilst I recognise that vinyl has its supporters, we are in the digital age. I listen to much of my Tubbs collection in the car via my mp3 player or CD. I was delighted to be able to download the Voodoo session via eMusic for a couple of quid. Maybe Gearbox will sign up with eMusic too as have some of the other independents.

I'm with you too. I bought the Tubbs (and Harriott) on vinyl last week (for a lot of dosh - I remember when you could buy vinyl for 19/-6d - oops showing my age) and found when they were placed on the turntable they produced a horrible squealing sound - not their fault I hasten to add - but the weight of these 180gm pressings was too much for my crappy old turntable which I will now have to repair. The actual quality of these discs and the packaging and sleeve notes is superb. But why can't we at least have the option of a digital download, as with the Voodoo sessions? This would surely cost next to nothing in production terms and reap in many more sales?
