Suggestion

Don't swing Twenty-Four. Jer, on the lead sheet you stated you are open to either swinging it or playing it as a bossa.

My two: To give some variety to the mix I suggest you go for the bossa or even a samba feel. If Jay plays a samba beat on the drums that would be killin'. Jay, you could samba, right?

A bossa would work too but it wouldn't be as intense. However, as I said before, it would give a different feel to the selections that are already up there.

I like this tune too, Chris, and I'd like to play it also.

Jerry, let's play it when we meet this weekend.

Two More

Two More

Added two salsa-like tunes that I've had kicking around for a while: Varick Street and South of L.A., at Free Jazz Institute.

All the tunes I've added lately I had originally posted last year as well.

Jer, please post a list of all the tunes up for consideration so far, time permitting. I'm beginning to fall behind with regard to knowing what they are.

Quiescent

Nice tune, Jay. Another type of tune I dig. You guys are killin'. Keep up the excellent work. Jeff, I'm looking forward to hearing a midi or mp3 of your tune.

They're all in the same place, on the AAJO - Work in Progress page at Free Jazz Institute.

We organized our stuff there to make it easy to browse all the tunes being submitted.

As of now there's a bit of an imbalance. I hope we can get more people to contribute tunes. We're waiting for a sound file for Jeff Brent's tune. And I think Scott is going up come up with something, if he doesn't have to use actual notes ...

I see "May I Have This Dance" has resurfaced for consideration. He he. Elegant tune, Jerry! Elegant tune

May I remind you guys that this is the one I pleaded to have included last year. I am going to vote for it this year as well. The band should show a range of styles and material it can cover, if I may so add; meaning a range from elegant material like "May I Have This Dance" or "Quiescent" to swing tunes. Woo hoo

Ian and I got together the other day and among other things, we played Chris Thompson's tune, Jaywalkin'. Lots of fun, and not difficult.

But it's driving me nuts. I can't get the melody out of my head.

I wonder if Chris ever thought of writing for commercials.

Jerry, glad you and Ian like the tune! I knew Ian would have no problem with it.

Nope. Never thought of writing jingles.

My own tune

Since I'm on board for next year, I figured I'd at least post a tune and see what you all thought. It's called "free, free, free"

This is the link: http://freejazzinstitute.org/showpos...0012_alexpiano

If that does work just go to the originals on the freejazzinstitute page.

Hope you enjoy!

I should add that feels are not listed on the tune...and some hits aren't there. In a few days/weeks I will hopefully have the mp3 of my demo available. I'll send it then so you guys can have a better idea. Its a pretty free (lol) feeling, but the hits are apparent if you play the melody.

Alex,

The tune is rather complicated. An audio file will help to know how you intend it to be played.

We're trying to keep all the submissions to the AAJO in one place. Can you post it in the "Work in Progress" section, and put quotes around the title?

Thanks.

Cheers,
Jer

'May I Have This Dance' sounds great. I think that it sounds like something that Tom Harrell would write for a large ensemble (like on Time's Mirror). It's really lyrical.

hmmm.. Jerry's "Twenty Four" made me think of Claudio Roditi and "This Dance" reminds Justin of Tom Harrell... anyone else see a pattern here?
