In a Silent Way ?
Hi if got a question for all the fusion heads. I really like In A Silent Way from Miles, how it sets a certain mood and keeps that mood going all the way. It's really a very relaxing mood but it's keeps you going (for me that is). Now I was looking at some other fusion efforts from Miles but some don't really have that certain vibe over it as IASW has, they seem more aggresive and that's not really my style. So what other albums from Miles (or others) would you recommend with the same kind of mood as IASW?

I honestly can't think of anything to recommend you, Mondo. In A Silent Way is a completely unique masterpiece in a class of its own, in my opinion.

Above all, the first ("Weather Report"), "Sweetnighter" and "Misterious traveller". After all, Shorter and Zawinul belonged to both line-ups... ![]() You can try also Zawinul's self-titled solo album (1970), which contains a likely original version of "In a silent way"... |

See if you can The Complete "In a Silent Way" Sessions boxed set.
It has some great material in the same or similar mood as IaSW--which is also included, of course. It also includes material originally released on Filles de Kilimanjaro, Water Babies, and Big Fun--which are all worth checking. |

Actually, Big Fun contains material coming from the complete "Bitches brew", "Jack Johnson" and "On the corner" sessions... |

Thanks for the correction. Problem is that I don't really listen to the discs, but to the mp3s--so the sources of the material all run together for me. |

I would definitely say that Filles de Kilamanjaro from Miles has somewhat of the same feel of In a Silent Way. As well, I would agree with the recommendation of Zawinul and would toss in, although it's hard to find, Miroslav Vitous' "Mountain in the Clouds."

Maybe also check out Herbie's SEXTANT and Wayne's MATO GROSSO FEIO? And it ain't quite the same thing, but it's a nice vibe, the Jan Garbarek/Miroslav duo record (whose name escapes me right now).
It's called ATMOS... |

Early Weather Report, and I feel some 70's ECM artists can get the same kind of vibe going on.

I think the version of "Silent Way" on the Zawinul album is later.
The first full version of the number seems to be the "rehearsal" version on the complete sessions where it's given an arrangement similar to the title track on Filles de Kilimanjaro. Apart from those already mentioned Filles de Kilamanjaro, Zawinul, Mountain In the Clouds, (also released as Infinite Search) it might be worth checking out Nucleus - Elastic Rock and We'll talk About it Later also some music from that era by Graham Collier (may be hard to get hold of). EDIT Another one - John Surman -Way Back When Last edited by burning dog; November 6th, 2009 at 04:01 PM. Reason: more stuff! |

However, both Nucleus albums are other good recommendations (the first more than the second, I think... )
