I think Bill is amazing, but he seems to have settled into an Americana groove ever since the Nashville album.

I hear what you're saying. I was a little disappointed by his latest album's ("Disfamer") sound, just because it had a similar Americana take. Of course, that disappointment was quickly doused by the fact, IMO, that Disfarmer is the most beautiful thing he's recorded with that sound to date. I'm hoping that Bill experiences a sense of the perfection that Disfarmer conveys to me, and maybe he decides to move in another direction.
That being said, I thought "History, Mystery" spoke more to his "Quartet" sound than "Nashville", and his album "Floratone" also, for the most part, strayed away from the Nashville sound, as did "Unspeakable". They're recording a new Floratone album as we speak, which, I'm pretty sure, is scheduled for an early 2010 release.
It would be cool, however, for a jolt similar to the one I received when he recorded Intercontinentals. That album, following on the heels of "The Willies" (Americana) and the Holland/Jones album (straight-ahead, Frisell style), was a wonderful departure from previous albums while still permeated with his signature voice.
Y'know thinking back on his albums right now, it occurs to me that this guy has been putting out something like an album a year for the last ten. Considering the high level of musicianship and originality, that's an amazing accomplishment. I'm so preoccupied with enjoying each album, I kind've lost the perspective of the totality of his discography.

I found the Richter album unlistenable. I just couldn't get through it. Maybe some day down the road it'll ring for me.

I've been wandering down the halls of emusic and checking out the Ambient section. One band called Disinterested sounded pretty good, and much to my happy surprise, Bill Frisell makes a guest appearance on a track. Here's a link to their myspace page with the full track. It's called "Blankets".

The Richter starts out a little chaotic but mellows out a little, you also have to consider that it was written to go along with the art.

Speaking of guest appearances, you may also want to check this out...

Get this album!! He's on at least a third of the album and it's magnificent, a mix of Americana, Psychedelic and Morricone.

I think that the debate on whether the album reflects his "Quartet sound" versus "Nashville sound" is all academic. Bottom line is that he has continued to be a very prolific artist that releases quality product on almost an annual basis. He is a hell of a nice guy as well!

While I have the same reservations about Bill's recorded Richter 858 CD; catching the group perform live last year at the Village Vanguard was an entirely different story, and a revelation, which really made me appreciate the quality of the work which is not so obvious to my ears from the Songline CD.

Bill Frisell is a remarkable musician and I eagerly anticipate each of his new releases. Looking forward to the vinyl "Good Dog, Happy Man" as well as I hope it is a sonic masterpiece.

In addition to the new Floratone album coming soon, Bill is also collaborating with Vinicius Cantuaria on Vinnie's next album. This is a partnership that's met with wild success previously and on both musician's albums. Looking forward to it, big time.

Meant to post, saw Frisell with the 858 Quartet (Hank Roberts - wow! - Eivind Kang and Ron Miles) in Germany a week or so back. Review here.
