Wow, it's really tough to limit the pick to just one CD. That's like saying that you really love steak and asking where you can get a great steak because you're going to limit yourself to only one more.
From earlier in his career, The Discovery Sessions, The Artistry Of Pepper, Modern Art, The Return Of Art Pepper or Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section. From the 60's, Smack Up or Intensity. From around the time of the VV recordings I always liked Living Legend and The Trip. Post VV, Straight Life and Winter Moon. With Art Pepper, you really can't go wrong.

The only Art Pepper cd I have is Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section. Tell you the truth, eventhough I thought his playing was spectacular, I never gave it the respect it deserved until fairly recently. I thought he followed the rhythm section too much, let it/them lead him; seems like he didn't "take control," take the bull by the horns, up to my expectations. However, the more I listen to it, the more I think, "That's cool," and listen to him without my preconceived expectations. He really does blow his ass off on this recording.

Another good choice are either of the duet albums Art did with George Cables. "Goin' Home" and "Tete-A-Tete" are both brilliant.
![]() There's nothing like a piano sax duet to reveal the soul of a musician. Cheers,

Out of all the sax players this is one cat i haven't checked out yet.I bought his biography a month ago which is really interesting i am half way through and i tell ya' it's a great insight to the man and his music.I remember seeing ages ago a mid priced CD with 3 or 4 albums from the 50's dont remember the label though.Gonna check it out i think this might be a good place to start with art pepper.

Difficult. I have heard quite a lot of Art's work - although by no means all - and the one I return to most is Smack Up.

Finally got my shortlist down to three: "Smack Up" "The Trip" and "Today". Of these, I would probably have to plump for "The Trip" - the first album of his I bought back in the late 70s - which still sounds as fresh after all these years.
