Calliope Records

Has anyone heard of Calliope Records (not the current classical label)

Around 1976 it was issuing a series called Sessions, Live -- featuring various West Coasters all from 1956-58 period

I have been trying to find some details of the sessions, because, although there are dates, there is no personnel listings.

I tracked down a listing on the Chris Connor site and find that the tracks are described as "Unauthorised"
They were issued in 1976 and Copyright is being claimed by Andasol Records, Ltd and Cinema Finance Associates Ltd (Ltd in the US??? Sounds like an offshore operation)

Calliope Records Distributed by Festival Records Inc, Sherman Oaks, California

The problems I am encountering are that there are several companies using these names around the world and there is no sign of an Andasol Records

Any info anyone that could help me on my way

It's not often that a query fails on this site, but this one drew a blank

I have just acquired another Calliope LP with Cal Tjader, Chris Connor and Paul Togawa

Can anyone point me in the right direction

Having recently acquired a few more albums from this series, I thought I would resurrect this thread, just to see if a new genereation of AAJers had any more info.

I have googled it, but there is so much garbage from discog sites listing single albums that I cannot find aything about the label itself, except that it did not last very long

Another bit of info is that the liner notes author was Jim Pewter, who seems to be a well-known DJ

Calliope 3011 3023

After posting I noticed that the listing for CAL 3011 was incomplete:

Cal Tjader w. Shirli Sonders(1957)/Chico Hamilton w. Georgia Carr(1956)

Ruth Olay was the vocalist on the Kessel session.

Many of the other listing do not have dates. I am planning a blog to list complete data for every show, Calliope covers, back liners, labels, personnel.

I will post a url once I have a few entries completed.

Thanks JA

I have since picked up a few more in my wanders round the London record shops. I haven't had a bad one yet from this series

Do you know what happened to them, or was it just another company with a good idea and no management skills?

Source of Calliope LPs music

Jim- many thanks for the Calliope record listing. I hope on your blog you will include information about the source of the music. I would like to know if the Calliope LPs are the first release of the music or re-releases from previously issued LPs.

Yes, it is his site. He just recently mentioned it on a West Coast Jazz forum I follow.

Well done JA. I've had a quick look and it seems to be a very comprehensive document

Only problem is that if people start to see that, the £2-3 I am currently paying for them will go up

Calliope Records

Edited by Moderator Tenorman

Listening to CAL-3003 I notice that the left hand channel is dominant. Is this a peculiarity of my system or has someone else noticed this?

The LP has several cuts by the Red Mitchell Quartet. There is definitely a saxophone, flute, piano and drums playing. Who are the players?

Problem solved. The head on my turntable arm had become mis-aligned. After loosening the screws and re-positioning the head on the shaft my left channel dominant problem went away.

Sorry I have not replied to some of the questions posed regarding Calliope Records. I have had some problems in getting logged in, but that seems to have been solved now.

I believe that my posts to the Calliope Records blog have answered all of the questions put forth in this thread thus far. I have just posted details on Calliope Records CAL 3009, the Buddy Collette sessions.

The address for those who have not had a look yet is:

callioperecords.blogspot.com

I am also doing a blog devoted to a Pacific Jazz / World Pacific Labelography. The address for that blog is:

pacificjazz.blogspot.com
