Hey guys and gals:
I have not posted here in a while. I've been awfully busy just trying to survive. I updated my website a number of months ago. It's still not where I want it to be. I just don't have enough of the kinds of shots (the commercial ones) I need there to advertise as I'd like in order to make some more money, but you may want to take a look anyway. Thanks Blacryder. Pope, I'll respond to your post asap. Can't right now because I'm at work. In the meantime, yes, as is the case with my bass playing, I have a ways to go still as you can see :-)

I got a chance to be offered a full time job doing jewelry photogs after the company saw my shots in the "General Retail" section and declined. Yup. I declined. Why? Long story. Maybe later I'll explain. Basically I was not confident that I could just go in there and knock their socks off. Why? Another longish story. Maybe later I'll explain, but I know what they liked. It's the very first shot of the necklace, and maybe the two after that. Shooting jewelry to make it look nice or sliverware is not exactly a brainless exercise or hardly one. It takes a little know how.

I started doing it, but unfortunately it was becoming a “job” rather than a pleasure. I told this to a pro photographic dealer friend of mine, and he said I would hate it in six months. For me the writing was on the wall, and luckily for me, an erstwhile colleague contacted me, and got me a job back in telecomms. I have had to retire from that on health grounds, but I don’t miss it one iota. I can’t take photos like I used to, but there are people far worse off than me. Pro photography, you have to have a business brain as well as an eye. Could you survive financially doing one facet of photography? Having to take pictures even when you may not feel like it? – Be careful what you wish for!!!!

Page, Pope, Chris
Thank you for the kind words Page and Chris.
Pope, I'll send another reply to you asap regarding your last post. Again, I'm too busy right now to say more because I'm at work.

I'm testing something new, you're all my Guinea pigs
![]() anyways.... Instead of Flickr I'm trying the use of dropbox. This is a cloud service that allows me to store pics and docs and share folders with friends. That's you. ![]() There are 19 pics in this folder. I exported them out of Lightroom at full size but a touch less than full quality. When you click on the link it takes you to a web site with a small version of the pic. If you choose you can click on the full resolution picture. I encourage you check out these images. I haven't been so excited about a camera in a long time. Charles River Nov 10 2012 I hope this link works. You should be able to see a slideshow and individual pics, small and large. Fingers crossed. |

I feel honoured Homer. Thank you for sharing with us.
Seeing your photos I realize I just love this time of year with the colouring of the leaves especially on a quiet sunny day like in yours. Really nice!

![]() Just back from three weeks away, and have been working with the d800 a lot, in conjunction with a book that's helping me demystify its complexities. I think I reached a certain level of understanding this past Friday night in Oslo, where I covered a tremendous tribute to singer Sidsel Endresen, with participants including Bugge Wesseltoft (piano, keyboards); Morten Qvenild (hyperpiano, vocals); Django Bates (piano, vocals); Stian Westerhus (guitar); Håkon Kornstad (saxophone, mbira, vocals); Nils Petter Molvær (trumpet, vocals); Eldbjørg Raknes (vocals, electronics); Live Maria Rogen (vocals); Solveig Slettahjell (vocals); Elise Christensen: (vocals); Jan Bang (live sampling) and Audun Kleive (drums, percussion). Plan to take today off and start processing the images tomorrow, so when they're up I'll post here. I think I got some of the best photos I've take with the new camera...suddenly managed to balance all the parameters to get shots that are brighter, crisper and clearer. Hope you agree. Anyway, the main point here was to tell you, Homer, how absolutely wonderful those shots are. I largely missed autumn and the leaf-changing because I was on the road; your pix almost make me feel like I didn't ![]() And Ian, I can totally understand. My background is not dissimilar, as I was a data center manager, amongst other high tech jobs, until I decided I'd had enough. The choice to do what I am doing was risky, but it's suddenly starting to pay off: I've had more paid work this year than the past 8 years combined, and if it continues this way, then life will be just fine. Great, actually, as I'm now doing something I do so love that it's worth the drop in income. Good luck! |

Aside from that, the actual shooting is only a small part of the job. The major part is sales related, selling your services, getting clients, work, etc., then there are other variables, post processing, etc. In short, as you mentioned, very much business or businesslike. John, I'm glad to hear of your recent successes.

Thanks, Ian; it's all come as something of an unexpected surprise - and yes, you absolutely need to be able to take care of business. But your previous gig ought to help with that, and one thing I've learned: doing what you love, even for less $$, is infinitely better (especially as I am now on the south side of my 50s!)...
DO what works for ya, of course, but if you feel like photography is calling ya, then see if you can't make it work. Best! John |
