On his website the release date says 11/13/12

This is also a double album. Goes on my "must have" list.

Cheers, Robert

It's a pretty nice CD, I got an advance of it a few weeks ago. It's got a a different vibe than past CD's, with electric piano, and some tunes with a SLIGHT fusion edge.

I love Kurt, and love everything he's done. This is really good.

THe Remedy is my favorite Kurt CD.

Just received a notice from ECM about some forthcoming releases:

Eberhard Weber, Resume (to be released: Nov. 20)

Eivind Aarset, Dream Logic (to be released: Nov. 13)

Food, Mercurial Balm (I haven't found a release date on this)

I'll be writing up Dream Logic as soon as I am back from Oslo (tomorrow). Food and Weber (out now in Europe; no US date set yet) on their way, though I've had a rough mix of the Food (european release later this month, no US date set for 2012) since May and it is, in a word, wonderful. A is Eivind's record. The Weber should prove interesting....

Don't know if this album has already been mentioned, so just in case. . .

Released earlier this year:

Portico Quartet - Portico Quartet (Real World Records)

It was, indeed, when I reviewed it here. I'd a considerable stylistic shift from the British quartet's previous releases, but it's a good 'un...

Oskar Schönning - "The Violin"

Here's a terrific new album from Sweden.

In January of this year, double-bass man Oskar Schönning gathered a fine sextet of top Swedish jazz talent for two days in a remote old school in Hälsningland province to record his four-part suite "The Violin".

It's a beautiful, thoughtful work, particularly Lisa Rydberg's taut, keening violin theme which drifts in and out of the music. Nils Berg takes a break from his excellent Cinemascope band to add a breathy, sparse bass clarinet. The other three seats are occupied by Emil Strandberg (trumpet), Sebastian Voegler (drums) and the hardest-working pianist in Swedish jazz, Jonas Östholm.

What first caught my attention about this album was Schönning's description of the music he was aiming for as "A mixture of 'Line Up' by Lennie Tristano and 'Spiegel im Spiegel' by Arvo Pärt." Now that's aiming high, but personally I think that he may even have pulled it off - "The Violin" is a sparkling, fully realised work. Any downsides? Well ... at 34 minutes it's not the longest CD in my collection, but I'd rather have 34 minutes of 5-star magic than 78 minutes of tosh.

Sadly, I can't seem to locate any audio samples from the album out there on the net. The sole excerpt I can find is this 4-minute film on YouTube. It's lovely, but it doesn't give any airing to the jazzier, more uptempo parts of the album.

This is now complete for the first time.

Also, Marilyn Crispell has a new Duo recording with Gary Peacock due from ECM early next year.

Quote:
The complete Hymns - Spheres, the recording from 1976 on which Keith Jarrett plays the pipe organ, has always been available in its original 2-LP version but only four selected movements of Spheres were released, in 1985, on a single CD. Now the whole of this remarkable work can be enjoyed once again, as it is made available for the first time in a two-CD set.

Dating from the year after the iconic The Köln Concert and just before Jarrett embarked on his (six-album) Sun Bear Concerts in Japan, Hymns - Spheres was a ground-breaking set of improvisations for its era. They were recorded on the "Trinity Organ", the larger of the two Karl Joseph Riepp (1719-1775) organs at the famous Benedictine Abbey in Ottobeuren, Bavaria. No overdubs, technical ornamentations or additions were utilized, only the pure sound of the organ in the abbey is heard on the recording. Many of the unique effects, although never before used, were accomplished by pulling certain stops part way, while others remained completely open or closed. Amazingly, baroque organs have always had this capability.

I didn't get on with this. I thought it was a serious step back from their first two (which I own and enjoy).

I'm sure these have already been mentioned - but if so they deserve it again, no doubt.

There are some new CamJazz boxes out - I already have mine.

It's definitely different. I don't think it's a step back though.

Anyway, I like it.
