I'll be writing up Dream Logic as soon as I am back from Oslo (tomorrow). Food and Weber (out now in Europe; no US date set yet) on their way, though I've had a rough mix of the Food (european release later this month, no US date set for 2012) since May and it is, in a word, wonderful. A is Eivind's record. The Weber should prove interesting....

Oskar Schönning - "The Violin"
Here's a terrific new album from Sweden.
In January of this year, double-bass man Oskar Schönning gathered a fine sextet of top Swedish jazz talent for two days in a remote old school in Hälsningland province to record his four-part suite "The Violin". It's a beautiful, thoughtful work, particularly Lisa Rydberg's taut, keening violin theme which drifts in and out of the music. Nils Berg takes a break from his excellent Cinemascope band to add a breathy, sparse bass clarinet. The other three seats are occupied by Emil Strandberg (trumpet), Sebastian Voegler (drums) and the hardest-working pianist in Swedish jazz, Jonas Östholm. What first caught my attention about this album was Schönning's description of the music he was aiming for as "A mixture of 'Line Up' by Lennie Tristano and 'Spiegel im Spiegel' by Arvo Pärt." Now that's aiming high, but personally I think that he may even have pulled it off - "The Violin" is a sparkling, fully realised work. Any downsides? Well ... at 34 minutes it's not the longest CD in my collection, but I'd rather have 34 minutes of 5-star magic than 78 minutes of tosh. Sadly, I can't seem to locate any audio samples from the album out there on the net. The sole excerpt I can find is this 4-minute film on YouTube. It's lovely, but it doesn't give any airing to the jazzier, more uptempo parts of the album. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlLQnQA0XF8 http://www.oskarschonning.com/shop/fysisk.html

I'm sure these have already been mentioned - but if so they deserve it again, no doubt.
There are some new CamJazz boxes out - I already have mine. ![]()
