Were you as surprised as I was to see so many Karajan recommendation in Gramophone guide to Mahler??? In many Mahler-fan circles (I was formerly a dedicated reader of the Mahler-list here), Karajan's Mahler interpretations are considered second-rate -- or even worse. And the Berlin PO is similarly disparaged as "not a Mahler orchestra" -- since they don't have the Mahler performing tradition of, say, the Vienna PO or the Concertgebouw O.) ...I've never heard any of Karajan's Mahler recordings myself, so I can't give my opinion one way or the other.

I've found that Bruno Walter and Leonard Bernstein are the Mahler conductors that I return to the most. But I love Rafael Kubelik's and Jascha Horenstein's Mahler recordings too. I suppose one of the glories of Mahler's music is that it's so flexible -- and that each conductor can put his own interpretive stamp on it. Because the music is so vast, it defies a single interpretation.

FYI - Tony Duggan's Mahler survey here on MusicWeb International is worth a look-see if you'd like another take on recommended Mahler recordings.
Hutch, Mahler's music is not to my taste. Not sure why. Generally speaking, I prefer smaller works, chamber music. The bulk of my classical collection is chamber works or solo piano. There are exceptions, of course, such as certain symphonies and some orchestral works that I enjoy, Beethoven and Shostakovich (and recently Rauatavaara) for symphonies, Debussy and Stravinsky and Bartok (and recently Dutilleux) for orchestral works. But I had read Gramophone article and thought it might of interest to you.

I had seen Gramophone's earlier Bach recommendations. Bach is more to my taste, and I enjoyed seeing their recommendations; certain ones I agreed with, but there were others I would have recommended instead. When I get a chance, I'll post something on Bach recommendations over in classical thread. All the best.

Excellent record! I recently found my outakes CD from these sessions - two CD's of alternate takes and additional tracks in superb quality. Good stuff.

It might have been better if Vangelis had turned down the opportunity to write the score for Chariots of Fire. Sure it raised his profile big time, and I'm sure commercially it's far and away the most popular thing he's done, but there are downsides for the creative musician. For one, he's always associated with that melody which has insinuated itself into popular consciousness. Yet Vangelis was active long before Chariots, and it doesn't represent his best works. So say I.

Tonight - among other things - I have played these three. Albedo is probably my favorite, an opinion colored by it being my introduction to the mans work. Even after all these years - I've owned it in various formats for more than 40 years now - I find it an exhilarating listen. It has its single (Alpha/Pulstar) but it's in its freer moments that it really takes flight. That and the wonderful use of a church organ.

Beaubourg is that curiosity, a moment when an artist just excretes something something strange, sop peculiar, it's easy to assume it's one big mistake. Gone are the melodies. Gone are the driving rhythms. In are the abstract bleeps and bloops that bounce from speaker to speaker like some demented demo disc for hi-fi. The album isn't quite unique in his discography, as Vangelis would one-up it for weirdness with invisible Connections later. I find it fascinating.

Spiral on the other hand is classic Vangelis. Great melodies, a pop sensibility, without the sticky sugary substances that make that genre so nauseating.

Vangelis, in youth parlance, ROCKS.

It's taken a while for me to eventually catch up with Tom Waits early releases,
and this completes the set.

Wish I'd got a copy much sooner!

Lucy Kaplansky: Reunion

One of Lucy's best efforts yet. As always, her lyrics are as compelling as the music.

New Zeitkratzer. Another eclectic, eccentric, and peculiar set of tunes. Love these guys!
