That's great. The original CD release was rather bizarre (Spheres only, and just a subset - I think 4 tracks totaling about 40 mins?).

not so sure I'd call it a step back, since it's really a step in a totally different direction, IMO.

While I was and am fine with the recording, I will say that I saw them in Germany a couple weeks ago, and was really disappointed, especially since I saw them in Montreal in 2010 and really enjoyed them.

So, if you don't like the record, you really don't want to see 'em live, Vaughan; if you don't like the changes they've made with the new record (really the result of losing one of the original members, and the new guy coming in with a greater interest in electronics), live, they're even more amplified and exaggerated.

Truly one of the most disappointing performances I've seen in a long time.

Wayne Shorter is back on Blue Note for "Without a Net", out Feb. 5.

Looks like it's mostly from a late 2011 tour, but there are some new songs in the mix.

He's 80 next year. Wow. Great to be doing what you love at that age.

Yeah, I meant creatively. They seemed to be doing well in their first two CD's, but their third just felt....... a bit like an organized train wreck to me. Everything that was compelling about them just went down the pan as they played with their new toys. Surely one member leaving shouldn't have had that effect?

I really don't like to rain on their parade, I'm sure they're committed. I've certainly got nothing against electronic music (in fact I've been listening to more electronic based music than anything else over the last few months). But this one simply did nothing for me - which is a pity, because I bought their previous titles.

Agreed. But like i said in last post, if you feel this way about the record, man, you should(n't!) have seen them live. Take the things you don't like about the record and amplify them by about 400%.

Fair enough. For me, I liked it fine, but live they simply don't have what it takes, imo, to take relatively short pieces on the album and expand them to 10-15-20 mins. Was like watching paint dry.

This makes me very happy. I've been longing for a new Shorter album for a very long time.

Cheers,

Rosenwinkel - Star of Juptier

For those of you who are impatient, you can download this on his label's website for 14.99 - double album.

I'm just into the first song, but so far so good!

Cheers, Robert

Great news!

Another new release:

Jose Luis Monton, Solo Guitarra (ECM): Released Nov. 13, 2012

My local record store classified this as jazz. It's more like classical or flamenco guitar, but seems to be based on original compositions.

This got a very stellar review on Free Jazz.

With Tony Malaby-sax, Tom Rainey-drums, Drew Gress-bass, and Marc Ducret-guitar
