Art Pepper I wish I could have seen you live

Just finished listening to all 4 cd's on "Blues For The Fisherman"live at Ronnie Scotts and the music is superb great re-mastering job from what I suspect was old analogue tapes.I immediately ordered 5 more of the "Unreleased Art" cd's 4 of which are live and one is a 3 disc collection of rare studio recordings from the three phases of his career 50's,60's,and 70's There is a photo of his mugshot on this disc from one of his many run-ins with the law.I can't wait for them to arrive I know the music inside will be fantastic they were all recorded in the last 3 years of his life and he somehow remained sober and poured out all his emotions both lows and highs into this music.

All cd's were released on the "Widows Taste" label thru the efforts of Art's widow Lurie Pepper who frequents this site occasionally and I have coresponded with her before and she seems like a wonderful woman always willing to talk about Art and jazz in general.

I have read "Straight Life" Art's autobiography and own many of his other discs including the Complete Village Vangaurd Sessions" and I would say to those on this forum if you have never gave Art a listen to reconsider and give it a try because Art is truly.....ART

I have not heard much of his music, but I like what I have heard. Peace and goodwill.

I've enjoyed his music for years. Glad to see him mentioned here.
"Meets the Rhythm Section" is the best known, but I'll put in a word for the sessions he did on Aladdin, especially "Modern Art".
Russ Freeman or Carl Perkins on piano, Ben Tucker on bass, and Chuck Flores on drums.

If you thought you didn't need another version of Summertime you need to hear Art do it.

And maybe you could use another "Everything Happens to Me?"

In case you guys didn't know it, I give away free Art Pepper music on my blog, every month. Some never-before-released, some released but too beautiful not to listen to again. November's freebie is Everything Happens to Me. http://artpeppermusic.blogspot.com --Laurie

totally agreed. there are two versions of summertime actually, I don't think both are on the "modern art" album, I heard them on a comp (capitol vaults series) and I think both were recorded at the same period.

These are my favourite versions I think also with albert ayler's, which I think is pretty similar to art version's actually

I haven't heard much of Art Pepper's music but he was a great artist.

Pretty underrated if you ask me.

Don't overlook the late period Art Pepper -- two albums in particular which were among his last:

Winter Moon - A "with strings" album, but it's Art that really shines. I'm listening to his take on "When the Sun Comes Out" right now.

Goin' Home - A duo album with pianist George Cables. "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying" is the standout for me, but it's full of brilliant moments. Art plays clarinet here too.

Art Pepper and Milcho Leviev's band doing 'Goodbye' at Ronnie Scott's is one of the most emotional jazz pieces I've ever heard, absolutely marvellous.

Heard Art at Croydon, London, in the 70s, fantastic concert and the culmination of a journey that started with buying "Mel Torme and the Meltones" 10 years earlier and which led to a fascination with Marty Paich and all who sailed in his ship. "Smack Up" was my first Art LP and still the favourite small group session although "..and the Rhythm Section" runs it close. "Smack Up" introduced me to Frank Butler and Jack Sheldon and then some years later to Curtis Counce.
