Check out my scale exercises! part 2
All,
I've written a short essay with my ideas on using scales for tonal music, including a set of practice drills. I haven't studied theory (aside from the useful discussions here and reading the internet), so it's likely that my work is far from brilliant, but I was wondering if you guys would like to have a look: http://www.vm-electronica.com/taweno/scales.pdf I would appreciate any comments. Since I'm not a native English speaker, comments on any sentences poorly written or that need rephrasing would be very useful too. Cheers, Alex |

I think you're on the right track, and I think your written English is better than many native speakers.
There are a bunch of odd things in your exercises, though, maybe you are making transposition errors? Like the arpeggios don't seem to match up with the chords, your C major scale has an Eb . . . I was just going through it quickly so maybe I missed something. |

Thank you for the useful comments and the encouragement.
The eb note on the C major scale is just a chromatic enclosure, should be ok. Your comment on the scales not matching the chord symbols is a consequence that, in some cases, I'm not starting the scales on the tonic or chord tones. From your post, it's clear that this is misleading, so I'll change it by shifting the drills in question (since they are loops anyway). Very useful, thanks for your help! |

Well, it's a chromatic upper neighbor, not an enclosure. It's okay, but it is a bit weird to present an scale exercise like that, in my opinion.

Indeed it is.
I now understand what you mean. OK sound wise, but out of context. I don't have an straightforward fix for it, though. I can't replace the eb with a e and so on because the resulting exercises would have too much range for the trumpet when trying to play them in all 12 keys. I'll have a think. Thanks!!! |
