Phantom Dancer Play List Tues 16 Oct 2012

Subscriber Greetings, Phantom Dancers!

It's that time of year. The 2SER subscriber drive. 2SER, where The Phantom Dancer is recorded, is a volunteer run, community supported station

And each year we ask you for your financial support to keep The Phantom Dancer & 2SER on air. And so many of you come through, which is wonderful

This Tuesday's Phantom Dancer show has live swing and jazz from George Shearing, Wally Portingale (1940s Sydney band leader) Pete Daly & His Chicagoans and more

And in between songs I ask you to Share The Love and subscribe

Here's the play list and Video of the Week - since there's a set of rare 1929 – 1931 radio broadcasts on today's Phantom Dancer, here's a rare 1929 radio clip – an experiment in home recording. You'll see it all on Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge Blog: http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2...roadcast-1929/

Star Night At The Cocoanut Grove 1934

G'day Subscribers,

It's the second week of Subscriber Drive and this Tuesday I'll be playing some of the records I didn't get to play for you last week. See the play list below...

And as for last Saturday, I was making a film with the 'Bondi Hipster' and it didn't 'wrap', which is finish, in film talk, until 6pm. So my apologies as I could not make it to the studio

But all going well, next Saturday, which is the last day of the 2SER subscriber drive, The Phantom Dancer will be live to take your pledges by phone and email

Have you subscribed? If yes, THANK YOU. If not, take the time to subscribe this Tuesday 12noon – 1:30pm and Saturday 6 – 7:30pm. You'll be keeping The Phantom Dancer and 2SER on the air. And you'll be in the running for the daily prize draw and the major prize draw

The Subscriber Drive phone number is 9514 9500. The Subscriber Drive online sign-up page is http://www.2ser.com/supporter-drive

And since today's show features a set of Cocoanut Grove radio transcriptions, here's 'Star Night At The Cocoanut Grove' including a song by Bing Crosby and the play list on Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge Blog: http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2...ut-grove-1934/

Swing, Jazz & Charlie Chaplin

Hello Phantom Dancers

Thank you for your support during this year's Subscriber Drive. Good luck for the major draw in November

Yes, I did say the show would be live last Saturday. And I spent hours preparing a Saturday show for you. But a family member died, so it was important I be with my family. I hope you understand

And now for this Tuesday's and Saturday's show - a lot of the music I didn't get to play for you during the Subscriber Drive - Jimmy Dorsey from the Meadowbrook, John Kirby from the Aquarium in New York, Jack Teagarden from Coral Gables and more

See the Play List and the Video Of The Week, the funniest fight scene filmed ever starring Charlie Chaplin, at Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2...ng-scene-ever/

Phantom Dancer Tues 6 Nov and Sat 10 Nov. Live 11 Nov

Hello Phantom Dancers,
I'll be singing with my 1920s and 1930s band The Bakelite Broadcasters, tomorrow, Tuesday 6 November for the Melbourne Cup.

That means tomorrow's Phantom Dancer show, Tuesday 6 November, 2SER 107.3 12 noon (repeated Saturday 10 Nov, 6pm AEST, +11 GMT) will be a 'classic' show (from 8 November 2011). I hope you enjoy it. It's full of great swing & jazz from live 1920s – 60s radio and TV

Next Sunday, 11 November, The Phantom Dancer will be LIVE at the 2012 Newtown Festival in the 2SER Chillax Area, 3 – 3:45pm. Do come down to Camperdown Memorial Park to enjoy the live 1920s – 1960s radio & TV swing & jazz tunes, and the huge festival

Eventhough, this Tuesday and Saturday's Phantom Dancer will be an edited repeat, your Video of the Week, is another new vintage discovery found by trawling YouTube for you. Avalon Time Halloween Party 1939 starring Red Skelton and featuring Bob Strong's Orchestra with vocal group 'The Three Puffs' – Avalon were a brand of cancer stick – puffs – get it? Enjoy, Greg! See it on Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge: http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2012/11/05/1421/

in My Merry Oldsmobile

What a song, what a car (one of the longest lived car brands) what a show!

Yes, it's another classic Phantom Dancer this Tuesday and Saturday. A show from 2009 with so much great music I really enjoyed editing it for rebroadcast for you. I hope you enjoy listening to it. But do I have a play list? No. It went to air before this blog started in September 2009

Anyhow, I can tell you it has live swing and jazz from 1930s – 50s radio broadcasts by Kay Kyser, George Shearing, Phil Harris, Gene Krupa and more

And at the end I've added "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter" from the new Greg Poppleton and his Bakelite Broadcasters CD 'Doin' The Charleston'

Visit Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge Blog to see this week's Phantom Dancer Video of the Week, a 1932 Fleischer sing-a-long cartoon from 1932 featuring the 1905 hit song, 'In My Merry Oldsmobile'. Hee's the link: http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2...ry-oldsmobile/ Enjoy!

Benny Goodman Broadcast 1946

Hello Phantom Dancers,

Well, an unexpected surprise during last week’s Phantom Dancer – only one of the two turntables in the studio was working!

So I didn’t get to play all the records I had listed for you last week. But I know now that the turntable has been fixed, so you’ll be hearing live swing and jazz from 1920s – 1960s radio & TV by Lionel Hampton, Mildred Bailey and more I had listed for last week on this week’s show

Also some rare Australian radio from Melbourne’s 3AW in 1940, featuring pianist Isador Goodman and his Orchestra!

And for the Video of the Week, a complete Benny Goodman radio broadcast from the Palladium Ballroom in Hollywood in 1946

Read the play list and enjoy at Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge: http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2...946-broadcast/

Patti Page On The Phantom Dancer

Happy New Year, Phantom Dancers!

I'm looking forward to playing lots more swing and jazz from live 1920s – 1960s radio and TV for you in 2013 on The Phantom Dancer. And, if you have any feedback or requests for to hear your favourite swing and jazz songs on the show, please email me at phantomdancer@2ser.com

Sad to note that the singing rage, Patti Page, passed away on New Year's Day. So on this week's Phantom Dancer, we hear Ms Page singing with the Dorsey Brothers' Orchestra on their Stage Show, CBS TV, New York, in 1956

And for the Phantom Dancer Video of the Week we see and hear Patti Page on her own TV show, The Big Record, in a duet with Johnnie Ray. Enjoy! Check out this week's play list and video at Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2...hantom-dancer/

Machito and his Afro-Cubans

Cheerio Phantom Dancers,

What a show of live 1920s-60s radio swing and jazz for you this week!

Tune into Hawaiian tunes from The Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Honolulu in 1934, Lawrence Welk plays his Champagne Music over KECA LA in 1955 and for the Jitterbugs there's Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Buddy Rich, Jimmy Dorsey and more

The live radio clip of Xavier Cugat has inspired me to post as this week's Phantom Dancer Video of the Week, Machito and his Afro-Cubans over WMCA's Symphony Sid Show in the late 1940s. Enjoy on Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge, and see the play list there, too http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2...s-afro-cubans/

What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

What could possibly go wrong on live radio, Phantom Dancers?

Hear for yourself on this week's Phantom Dancer as Borrah Minevitch's Harmonica Rascals make a lo-fi dog's breakfast out of their WNEW New York broadcast on the stage of the Paramount Theatre for a Glenn Miller Day Broadcast, 5 Jun 1945. And there's lot's of live 1930s-1950s radio swing bands to dance to

Phantom Dancer Video of The Week – Boxcar Rhapsody (1942) – a jukebox soundie produced by composer Sam Coslow and starring Borrah Minevitch playing what is now the Armenian national anthem. Enjoy on this week's Greg Poppleton Radio Lounge Blog entry, 'What Could Possibly Go Wrong?': http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2...ibly-go-wrong/
