Freddie Hubbard: looking for "Swing it"

My Pandora feed just played a recording I had never heard: "Swing it," attributed to Freddie Hubbard. I have been trying in vain to discover the sidemen, and the original album it came from.

Pandora indicated that the album was:



A look at cd universe informs me that the material on this album was "Gathered mostly from two of Freddie Hubbard's classic recordings, THE BODY & THE SOUL and THE ARTISTRY OF FREDDIE HUBBARD." But when I examined those albums, that particular tune was absent. (In fact, I own those albums, and the personnel on "Swing it" seemed different to me.)

Can anyone help me figure out who the sidemen were on that date, and what album it was originally released on? I've found a couple of Freddie Hubbard discography sites, but they don't seem exhaustive.

according to the discographies it's from a Henry Butler Impulse album called " Fivin' Around"

Can be found in various forms on Ebay or as used cd on Amazon... new ones on Amazon are listed at $44.00

Many thanks for your investigative work. Something is odd, though. I looked for the Butler album. According to this page - http://avaxhome.ws/music/blues/Butler10.html - the album was released in 1986, with the following personnel:

Henry Butler - Piano
Charlie Haden - Bass
Billy Higgins - Drums
Freddie Hubbard - Trumbet
Azar Lawrence - tenor Sax
Steve Kujala - Flute
Jeff Clayton - Oboe

On the other hand, cd universe tells me that the personnel from the Freddie Hubbard album (which was supposed to be largely from albums released in the early 60s) was the following:

Freddie Hubbard (trumpet); Julius Held, Sol Shapiro, Arnold Eidus, Morris Stonzek, Charles McCracken , Raoul Poliakin, Gene Orloff, Harry Cykman, Harry Lookofsky (strings); Jerome Richardson (flute, baritone saxophone); Eric Dolphy (flute); Jimmy Heath, John Gilmore , Seldon Powell (tenor saxophone); Clark Terry, Ernie Royal, Al DeRisi (trumpet); Robert "Brother Ah" Northern, Julius Watkins (flugelhorn); Curtis Fuller, Melba Liston (trombone); Robert Powell (tuba); Tommy Flanagan, Cedar Walton (piano); Jimmy Cobb , Louis Hayes, Philly Joe Jones (drums).

Unless you located a different version of "Swing it," one of these sources must be wrong, perhaps Pandora.

This the only reference to Freddie Hubbard playing a tune called SWING IT
Note all the musicians do not play on all the tracks. I think if you can hear an oboe on the recording you're listening to, that might verify the source

What is your source? As I noted in the OP, CD universe indicates that the Priceless album includes Swing It, but it really makes no sense that a tune recorded decades later would be included with the rest of that material.

It's from the Tom lord discography. The version I have does not list the Hubbard comp that you reference, therefore is probably older than that cd
there is also a tune called "Swing It" recorded by Benny Golson in Dec 14th 1960, with Freddie Hubbard,, Curtis Fuller trombone, Cedar Walton piano, Tony Williams bass, Albert " Tootie" Heath drums
From the Album " Any number 1 to 10"
This was released on Argo, Chess, Mosaic and Lonehill.

If your version has a trumpet, tenor, trombone front line, it could be that version, though I don't think Impulse had the rights to the Argo / Chess catalog
. As for companies making weird selections on compilations... there are many out there that make me wonder what and why they were assembled, except of course to cash in on the name of the "star" involved
