The Weber is sourced from live solo shows recorded in the past two decades, then taken and augmented in the studio by Weber and guests Jan Garbarek and Michael Di Pasqua. From the ECM website:

Quote:
Eberhard Weber played hundreds of concerts in his time as a member of the Jan Garbarek Group, and each of them included an extended feature for the bassist alone, often effectively a spontaneous composition rather than a ‘bass solo’ in strict jazz sense. For “Résumé” Weber has returned to recordings of these solo sequences and reworked them into an album with its own sense of flow. The unique sound of Eberhard’s customised electric bass is heard here mostly in the context of his own keyboard settings and treatments, but also augmented by the saxophones and overtone flute of Jan Garbarek (on three tracks) and by the percussion of Michael DiPasqua. Based on live recordings made between 1990 and 2007 at locations from Karlsruhe to Santiago, the album was mixed in the South of France by Weber, Manfred Eicher, Michael DiPasqua and Gérard de Haro in 2011.
My copy is on the way, and I'm very curious to hear it, so am doing a little pre-release Weber-a-thon this evening, coincidentally.

My local record store classified this as jazz. It's more like classical or flamenco guitar, but seems to be based on original compositions.
It is, on all counts.

I have all five volumes of the previously issued "Paul Motian-Live on Broadway" CDs on Winter & Winter.

Always looking for new material that I have not heard yet from Motian.

I am assuming the new release is a reissue without any new material?

Regards,

LWayne

I don't have this one yet (empty pockets), but I'm a fan of his trio stuff, so I will be getting it.

I'm just curious what folks opinions are from those of you that have purchased it. Bobo certainly didn't give much thought to coming up with interesting cover art this time out.

Bobo doesn't have anything to do with the cover art, other than agreeing or (which is rare) disagreeing. If you look at the past history of ECM, you'll find that this kind of cover - plain, and clear - is amongst a number of specific stylistic approaches taken. No, it doesn't say a whole lot, and I'm ok with that, but just wanted to point out that, in most cases, ECM has a designer, Sascha Kleiss, who does the work, like it or not

Meanwhile, if you've not seen it and would like to know more about the record, you can read my review here. I think it's great one, building on the strength of Cantando and that album's important introduction of young Swedish drummer Jon Fålt into the mix. Much as I love Jon Christensen, sometimes it's the right thing to do to play some time, and Christensen is pretty steadfastly against it these days, something further exaggerated by health issues that have left his legs pretty weak, making playing time on the kit more difficult. No such problems for Fålt and, while he can play texture like Christensen, he can also play time, making this the trio's strongest record, imo, since Reflections, in the mid-1990s.

Best!
John

Thanks for some background and the review John - sounds very good. I've always liked Jormin's playing as much as Stenson's in his trio, so this one will be on top of my Christmas wish list for sure!

Jon Fält

John: many thanks for your review of Indicum - and indeed for your tireless, superb coverage of so much ECM-related stuff.
Just one teeny-tiny point: Bobo's drummer is Jon Fält, not Jon Fålt. "Fält" means 'Field' in Swedish, whereas 'fålt' isn't really a word at all.

This sounds like it could be tricky to get right, but Weber has always put out quality stuff, so i'm sure it will be great. At any rate, I'm definitely looking forward to this one.

Listened to it last night; great stuff, but be aware thate di Pasqua and Garbarek are only on selected tracks, and never together. It's mostly Weber and layered synths.

Ya, the cover is kind of a throwback to something like this (amoung others):

And ECM always seems to do things in sets for their covers, so not out of place with

What's Barbara Wojirsch up to these days?

Albums by two incredible and very original sax players. Just got both of these and they've both made my top 10 for the year! And look at the lineups. Top shelf in every way!

Jason Robinson - Tiresian Symmetry

Continuing his ongoing partnership with Cuneiform Records, Tiresian Symmetry is Jason's seventh album as a leader. An expanded version of his Janus Ensemble, the album features a series of compositions for an unorthodox nine-piece ensemble inspired by the ancient Greek myth of Tiresias and the music of Henry Threadgill in the 1990s. The group features Robinson (tenor sax, soprano sax, alto flute), JD Parran (alto clarinet, contra bass clarinet, tenor sax), Marty Ehrlich (alto sax, bass clarinet, c flute), Bill Lowe (tuba, bass trombone), Marcus Rojas (tuba), Liberty Ellman (guitar), Drew Gress (bass), George Schuller (drums), and Ches Smith (drums, glockenspiel).

Jacam Manricks - Cloud Nine

The record features Manricks on alto saxophone and compositions, Adam Rogers on guitar, Matt Wilson on drums and Sam Yahel on organ. The material selected for the record consists of 6 new original tunes and 2 arrangements, one of a Finnish hymn and another of a pretty Jobim tune called Luiza.

Cheers, Robert

This just caught my eye:

Eric Revis' Parallax - 11:11
with Eric Revis (b), Jason Moran (p), Ken Vandermark (ts), Nasheet Waits (d)
released on Clean Feed on Nov 26

Samples sound promising.

Anyone heard it?
