Soil & "Pimp" Sessions

New to Jazz, this is pretty much the only band I like. Know a better band, similar band, just think they're shit, general thoughts?

As far as traditional jazz goes you might like the music Horace Silver and Art Blakey did together. Or, to go a completely different route, Chris Potter Underground.

They are really good fun live. I believe they used to play live sets at house & techno nights in clubs in Japan and got a great reception.

I can't think of anyone else quite like them but you might want to try Sleepwalker's first (self-titled) album or live albums by Quasimode if you like Japanese club jazz.

I think they are a great little band, in the hyperactive hardbop vein!

They can really play, at a fierce pace. Some of their slower work is interesting too.

I'm not sure what musical function the animator/cheerleader has, apart from writing some of the material. Maybe every hip Japanese band needs its Yamantaka Eye? Or am I doing too much of a rational lineup audit here?

I am not sure if JoellyK is REALLY asking for other recommendations, or just looking for wider views to compare her/his own with.

If the former, I would recommend the Finns around Jukka Eskola, Timo Lassy, Teddy Rok (Teppo Mäkynen) and so on. A bit cooler than S&PS for the most part, arguably more 'rounded' on their instruments, but (for better or worse) they play coasting grooves and nu-jazz as well as their own versions of retro sounds.

Eskola in particular is a brilliant exponent of flugel and trumpet.
