stacked 4ths on guitar - McCoy Tyner style
Hi guys,
Thought I would share a fun and fairly challenging Dorian phrase on here Stacked 4ths - D Dorian The lick plays around with one of my favourite patterns - a sequence of stacked 4ths (3 notes, all of which are the interval of a 4th apart), moving up and down the scale. Listen to jazz pianist McCoy Tyner to hear more stacked 4ths in action!!! The whole lick is based on D Dorian Mode: D E F G A B C (D) There's practice tips in the video info.. You can try it out on any of these jam tracks: Groove version of the Miles davis classic 'So What' - Backing Track D Dorian Jam Track D Dorian Jam Track (#2) Enjoy!!! |

I believe that McCoy Tyner was either the first jazz piano player or one of the first who introduced the fourth chords.
Chord chords and patterns have a very modern, new age sound to them. I watched the video and liked it a lot!

I'm pretty sure that Bill Evans did it before McCoy, but McCoy took it to another level and really developed the concept.

I got chided, big time, almost 40 years ago, for suggesting, in a college paper, that quartal chords were 'modern'. My teacher pointed out that they had been in used in classical music for many decades.

As for McCoy, he clearly said that he studied the usual harmony ; pent chords showed him Coltrane. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yh36PaE-Pf0

I'm very aware of major 6/9 chords. I didn't mean to say that he was the first person in the history of the world who played quartal jazz. I was talking about stacked fourth chords such as C-F-B-flat. Bill Evans and McCoy Tyner made stacked fourth chords popular in the 1960s. That's why I said McCoy was "one of the first" but since fourth chords were played before his time, McCoy and Evans still made them more popular.
