Piano-less trios
I just picked up the Lee Konitz album Motion its a piano-less trio with Lee, Elvin Jones, and bass player whose name escapes me. I really like this format and wondered if ya'll could recommend other similar trio albums horn, bass, drums.

Check out Joe Lovano's trio fascination w/Dave Holland and Elvin Jones. Lovano has other excellent trio recordings, I just can't recall the titles at the moment.

Joshua Redman did a couple of those. One is called Back East, but I do know the name of the other one. Peace and goodwill.

Sonny Rollin's EAST BROADWAY RUN DOWN is tenor trio, with the addition of Freddie Hubbard; an amazing recording!

If you like that one, check out Konitz's "Some New Stuff" (aka Alto Saxophonitz), with Greg Cohen and Joey Baron.

A trio I have recently come across from Sweden, on the the new to me but impressive Moserobie label:
Fredriksson, Kullhammar & Zetterberg GYLDENE TIDER VOL 1,2 and 3 Jonas Kullhammar is a highlight on tenor sax. Samples on iTunes if anyone is interested. |

My favorite sax trio is a contemporary group based in Paris called The Kandinsky Effect. The eponymous record came out in 2010 and remains one of my favorites (check out track #3: "Girl / Boy Song"). They have a new record coming out in mid January entitled Synesthesia (Cuneiform, 2013). A different kind of sax trio is a new group called The Odd Trio (sax-guitar-drums). Check out their 2012 release Birth of the Minotaur:

I've never heard Konitz's Motion, but I did have the privilege of catching him in a trio with bassist Jeremy Stratton and drummer George Schuller in August.
On the avant-garde side, there's: ![]() Sam Rivers - Live, with Cecil McBee or Arild Andersen on bass and Barry Altschul on drums, although Rivers does play piano on about 4 minutes of an hour-plus album. ![]() Peter Brotzmann/William Parker/Hamid Drake - Never Too Late, But Always Too Early, with reedist Brotzmann, bassist William Parker and percussionist Hamid Drake. ![]() DKV Trio - Baraka, with reedist Ken Vandermark, bassist Kent Kessler and Hamid Drake. ![]() Jason Stein's Locksmith Isidore - Three Kinds of Happiness, with bass clarinetist Stein, bassist Jason Roebke and drummer Mike Pride.
