A Few Pictures I Took Today - Page 102

Granite. igneous rock. Formed of molten material that probably cooled slowly over hundreds of thousands of years underneath the earth's surface... allowing for the formation of a variety of crystals and mixing of different densities and strata of materials. And now my kitchen counter-top. Any material serves as nature's canvas.

Thanks for the kind words, all. Homer - I agree I could have spent more time with that old car (and done a lot better with it). The good news is, it's on my inlaws' farm, so I can go back and snap it again next time I'm out at their place.

Pope - I think you're right about the crop. I'm a bit of a chronic under-cropper, I have to admit. I don't remember what I did with that particular shot. I took quite a few of that sunset and didn't have to do too much tweaking with them, since the view was unobstructed and the light was so good. I do remember thinking that the waterline should be roughly at the halfway point of the image, due to the mirror effect. Looking at it now, though, I can see that I missed that mark. I may try fooling around a bit and see how it looks trimmed up a bit.

Homer - that two-photo stitch is simply stellar . . .

I did try to snap a few this morning up in the mountains, where we spent the last couple of days after the holiday, but I got out too late and didn't have much luck. This was probably the most interesting of the lot, although it's not all that great. Anyway, thanks again!

Half-Baked... I always like your outdoors shots. They often remind me very much of some of my own pics. The lake shore with rocks and the mountains reminded me of these that I took just at sun-up, high up in the Beartooth mountain pass where I had camped. Until the sun got higher, I was shivering too much to concentrate on photography, but I couldn't ignore the amazing light (which, unfortunately, I didn't quite do justice to). But these were somewhat in your neighborhood... Southern Montana or maybe Northern Wyoming.

Thanks, Mike - 'appreciate the compliment. And great shots . . . some beautiful country in that neck of the woods . . . although I know what you mean about the cold. I've spent quite a few nights camping at elevation . . . when the sun isn't shining directly on you, it's cold as all get out - especially in those wee hours. It's incredible to watch the sun chase that early-morning mist across the water, though - which that first shot reminded me of . . .

Cool shots, Blacryder. I wrote an intro for a book by a photographer buddy of mine, Ziga Koritnik (if you folks have note seen his work, google him; he's amazing) and the intro is called "Ziga Koritnik and The Eye."

One of the things great photographers do, getting past the technical stuff, is have the ability to see things in everyday situations that others don't -could be a perspective, could be a small detail, but whatever it is, it results in photos that engage because they make you think about something normal - maybe even something mundane - in a completely different way.

It's really inspiring to see so many folks here who have "The Eye," because it's helping me look at the world differently.

And Blacryder - I agree with Kelman -- I dig those odd-angle and off-focus shots and perspectives, and you have a good eye for those.

I sometimes like to screw around with long exposures, while hand held, just to see what might come out. Usually, it's crap, but every once in a while something interesting emerges. I kind of liked the way this one turned out, which is a view of what's known as "Table Rock" here in Boise. It's basically a butte, or mesa, on the East end of town, which has a lighted cross on top. It's something of a landmark here, and is visible from my backyard. The first shot is my attempt to capture a full moon rising above the cross. The second is the same scene with a long exposure, with me intentionally jigging the camera to get a "bouncy" effect. Anyway, I kind of liked how it turned out . . . Cheers,

Homer - incredible shot. 'Really like it. And at risk of over analyzing things, I think what's really cool about it is that on the one hand, you have this killer mirror effect going in the background. Then, in the foreground, you have those amazing trees, which at first glance, almost have their own mirror effect, but when you look at them again, they sort of emerge into the foreground, and you realize they don't . . . a very cool effect (not to mention, a technically beautiful shot, with amazing depth of field). Kudos!
