He was like the King Midas of guitar. Everything he did was golden.

Aside from the work under his name, I have loved his co-leader work with Milt Jackson on Bags Meets Wes, and his sideman work on Nat Adderley's Work Song (recording during the same week as Incredible Jazz Guitar).

Also George Shearing and the Montgomery Brothers and Harold Land: West Coast Blues. The Riverside box set is a treasure. |

My inner guitar geek seems to be rearing its head these days, for reasons completely unknown , along with a singer/songwriter phased that has me eyeball deep in Joni Mitchell, Rickie Lee Jones and Neil Young. Don't ask why, I can never tell why my mind moves in these directions, while I'm in the midst of covering a whack of Norwegian and Dutch jazz.... But Wes? Always time for Wes. But right now, more than in some time, and loving it. |

I know that Jazz guitar is not everyone's favorite kinda jazz, especially amongst non guitarist Jazz musicians, but if you had to single out just one player to check out, and even transcribe, it simply has to be Wes. Held his own in any company (Griff, Bags, Mabern etc). Coltrane wanted him in his band, Rollins called him a "master" the Adderley bros "flipped" when they first saw him live and ran to a phone to tell Orin the (Keep)news...
Check out all the live Euro date dates mid 60's as well as the above, including DVD's. Just so cool! People often try to link Grant Green and Kenny Burrell to Wes' time and place in Jazz guitar history. No way! That's like comparing Buddy Holly to Jimi Hendrix!!!
