Fado em Si Bemol: Fado... With a Pinch of Jazz

Jazz reinvents itself every day, in any way, like a chameleon transforms Itself to match its surroundings. It is thanks to this ability that jazz's place in the world has been firmly cemented; from a musical point of view, there seem to be no physical or spiritual boundaries to what musicians can arrange with this ever-evolving genre, even if that means going against convention or even breaking with tradition...

Anyone interested in the Blues should check this out. I first heard Fado around 1972 while on holiday near Lisbon in Portugal (Estoril if you know the area). What I heard was probably pretty commercial, rather than the genuine stuff played in the bars off the main tourist routes in Lisbon.

Often called the Portuguese Blues there are several varieties depending on the area. The best known modern exponent outside of Portugal is probably Mariza. The Cape Verde Islands have their own version.

Have a listen -- you'll hear something new
