Ruben Diaz New Flamenco Magazine (e-zine)

Hola amigo!:

I would like to invite you to be part of this Weekly Magazine by raising questions and giving me suggestions thorugh e-mail so this magazine can become a good material for all flamenco lovers, researchers and musicians. Enjoy it!

I previously had a guitar varnished in French polished and now it’s
worn off almost completely in just three years of playing with it, but
my model Santos 1927 is perfect even after 6 years. I wonder which
kind of varnish has hence it does sound great and protects very nicely
the guitar. I would like to know according to your experience which
varnishes are better or more resistant for traveling to different
climates?

Comments, Questions and Answers:

My question is about a guitar that does not tune really well, let me explain myself. I have an expensive guitar that has issues with the drilling on the bridge orifices similar to those you showed in this video:

Being the case that such gross inaccuracies are there I was in shook to infer or think about how exact really were the measurements for the setting of the top in relation to the fret board. The guitar does not tune to my ears and now I am also attributing it to the fact that the top has fresh wood. In just one year it already bended making shorter the distances between both nuts in reference to the 12 fret.

What can I do?

In this issue there is a very interesting question about what is the
best way to learn flamenco, some interactive videos on Application of
the Secondary Dominants in Soleá por Bulería and a great video of a
Paco de Lucia concert. It's a must! (there is a little
synchronization thing... but the sound track is amazing). In this concert you
can see the mastery and the dynamic way Paco has always played. Also,
you can learn a lot of the interactivity between all the band members
as well as how the flamenco code works.

QUESTION 1: Are there any "rules" when someone is composing a flamenco piece? For example: intro-compas-falseta-compas-falseta etc. Is the number of falsetas played any specific number? What is that, in your opinion, that makes a flamenco composition sound like a flamenco composition?

QUESTION 2: Why do many of the palos in flamenco start counting at 12, and not 1? Practically, it makes no difference if you count from 12 and put the emphasis on *12* 1 2 *3* 4 5 *6* 7 *8* 9 *10* 11 or if you start from 1 and put the emphasis on *1* 2 3 *4* 5 6 *7* 8 *9* 10 *11* 12. The latter is more intuitive, but the former is what everyone use? When did this start, and why is that the case?

Happy New Year!

Although we measure time in years, days, hours, minutes, what really
counts is what we do in a certain span of time. There are instants (or
minutes) in which we live so intensely that are equivalent to years,
and there are other moments (or days) in which we experience life in
kind of slow motion; there are other certain moments in which we have
no sense of time though. Music has that magic, if we experience it in
a very intense way -with all our senses on it- we just don’t feel
time. Those moments can be eternal. As a musician I aspire you to
experience eternal instants with my music, those in which we derive a
great joy and remain in our hearts forever. I have experienced that
with the music of great composers too… Those are the valuable time
measurements… It would be fantastic if we could measure our life
experiences in musical minutes don’t you think!

Which are the eternal musical instants that have changed your life? I
look forward to your answer!
