I've been hearing lots of good things about the Gil Evans. Is it really that good?

The Schuller is excellent, as is Playscape's other new release --- the previously unreleased 3 CD Thomas Chapin set.

The Album of the Year - IMHO. If you're a Gill Evans fan, it's indispensable. As good as Individualism? If not, the best thing since.

Just started to listen to the Schuller. The Chapin's set is incredible, especially the 3rd disk which is more adventurous.

Cheers, Robert

1982 Trio + BJ Cole

My review of 1982 Trio + BJ Cole, today at All About Jazz.

This third record for the improvising trio of Nils Økland (Hardanger fiddle, violin), Sigbjørn Apeland (harmonium) and Øyvind Skarbø (drums) expands the folklore-meets-contemporary classical-meets-free improv of its first two discs by adding British BJ Cole, the pedal steel guitarist most have heard, even if they don't know his name, for work with everyone from Brian Eno and David Sylvian to Elton John and Sting. If it changes the trio's complexion, as it should, it also retains the markers that have made this trio so impressive since its early days, performing at the top of Mount Ulriken, in Bergen, Norway, as part of JazzNorway in a Nutshell 2010.

Review here.

Naxos Records is the largest classical record company in the world. I can't remember ever seeing them do jazz before, but they have a very interesting forthcoming release on Jan. 28, 2013:

JoAnn Falleta / Buffalo Symphony:
Duke Ellington: Black, Brown & Beige
(Naxos, "American Classics," 2012)

http://www.prestoclassical.co.uk/r/Naxos/8559737

Naxos' "American Classics" is a great series, which has all sorts of American composers, not only well-known ones like Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein, but also fine contemporary composers like Michael Daugherty, Paul Moravec, Richard Danielpour, and Jennifer Higdon. It would be great if they begin doing more jazz classics. Falleta is a fine up-and-coming conductor, and it would be great to hear Ellington's done with first-class sound quality. Hope this is good.

I have it already. It's great. They deconstruct/reconstruct several tunes in wonderfully unexpected ways.

You don't have to be. It's been released in Europe already. Got mine from Amazon France. Little more expensive, but I didn't know it was being released here. Minimized cost by tagging it onto an order containing a couple of the new Complete Black Saint/Soul Note boxes.

Yes, all great. There's also one by the Binney/McCaslin band Lan Xang called "Hidden Gardens". They had their self-titled release on Binney's Mythology label.

Just stumbled upon this:

Chris Potter, The Sirens (ECM, 2013): To be released Jan. 29, 2013.

While Potter has recorded with ECM as a member of Dave Holland's group, this is, to the best of my knowledge, his ECM debut as a leader. I wonder how this might differ from his usual high-energy sound--or will he bring it to this date?
