Question about current jazz artists out there...

Good morning!

I would like to start off by saying I have been a member of this board for some years and have really benefited from the insight and information here. So for that, thanks to all of you.

My jazz preferences are pretty straight forward. Being a Philly guy by birth, the DeFrancesco Brothers and Shirley Scott are towards the top, as well as any and all of the Jazz Messengers, whether on their own or with AB. In the end, anything organ-heavy or hard bop is right in my wheel house.

All that said, I am a bit (okay, a lot) ignorant about current artists.

So, the question... Which artists out there currently fall into either the really solid organ grinders or more of a driving bop sound?

Any and all recommendations are welcome.

Cheers,
Dan

Here are some that have an organist.

Walt Weiskopf - A World Away
Mike Clark - Carnival of Soul
Mike LeDonne - The Groover
Michael Brecker - Time Is of the Essence

Good luck on finding jazz you like. Peace and goodwill.

I'd recommend these:

Larry Goldings Trio - Sweet Science (2002)

Eric Alexander - Don't Follow the Crowd (2011)

Funny. I just grabbed these two pix from allmusic.com, and they gave both of these records 4.5 stars. Apparently, they agree with me.

I'm not really a hard bop fan, but these are artists out of that lineage whose artistry I have a great deal of respect for that you might like:

Wallace Roney
Terrell Stafford
Roy Hargrove
Terence Blanchard
80s-90s Donald Harrison

There's tons of great jazz being produced these days & I'm sure you'll enjoy tracking down the kind of stuff you enjoy.

I'd also argue that Donald Harrison has put out some good stuff in the 00's as well. These 3 pianoless trio recordings with Ron Carter and Billy Cobham are proof of that:

I don't disagree with you that he's put out some good stuff in the hard bop vein in recent years, I was just trying to advise the OP to start w/ the older stuff (which is all hard boppish) because just randomly picking up something more recent might lead to buying something that is more oriented toward Dixieland or hip-hop than bop.
