Jazz Santa 2012
OK, so what did the Jazz Santa deposit in your stocking this year?
And yes I know a lot of the jokes that can be applied to the above -- most of them predictable. But if you feel you must...........

For Christmas and my birthday purchases, I tend to fill gaps or buy albums that have slipped through the cracks due to budgetary concerns. This year's haul included:
Jessica Williams - Offering: This is only my second Jessica Williams album. With Williams recovering from spine surgery, she could use the support of fans through donations and CD sales. She also sends out a bonus album when you place an order for the first time, so I will be receiving Prophets, which is quite generous of her. Die Like a Dog (Brotzmann/Kondo/Parker/Drake) - Close Up, Lonberg-Holm/Brotzmann/Nilssen-Love - ADA and Hairy Bones (Brotzmann/Kondo/Pupillo/Nilssen-Love) - At Fresnes: Catalytic Sound is having a sale until December 31st, so it was a good opportunity to fuel my love affair with Brotzmann's music. Russ Freeman - Trio and Quartet and Annie Ross - A Gasser!: The first album includes all of the Freeman tracks from the OOP Mosaic Select and more. Freeman is also on the Ross album, which includes some instrumental tracks. It's a shame that Freeman was off the scene for his last 20 years, which makes his recordings all the more important. Booker Ervin - The Book Cooks: For as much as I enjoy Booker Ervin's playing, I don't have as much music in my collection as I should. I'm excited to hear how he sounds paired with Zoot Sims(!), and the rest of the band (Tommy Flanagan, Tommy Turrentine, George Tucker and Dannie Richmond) is top-notch. Frank Strazzeri - Frank's Blues: I was impressed with Strazzeri's playing on the Carmell Jones Mosaic Select, and I'm only familiar with flutist Sam Most through Buddy Rich's Blues Caravan. Paul Bley - Alone, Again: I don't own any of Bley's albums that he's released on his own Improvising Artists label, so I figured that Bley in a solo context would do the trick. Dave McMurdo Jazz Orchestra - Canadian Composers Portraits: Phil Nimmons: I was blown away when I first heard clarinetist/composer/arranger Phil Nimmons earlier this year. This album features two discs of a band playing Nimmons's arrangements, with Nimmons as a soloist, as well as a documentary disc. Howard McGhee/Kenny Drew - Howard McGhee/Introducing the Kenny Drew Trio: Part of Blue Note's sadly defunct Connoisseur 10" reissue series, the first half consists of Drew's first recording session as a sideman, while the second half consists of Drew's first session as a leader. It's essential listening for Kenny Drew fans. Like Russ Freeman, Drew is greatly underappreciated.
