It mirrors Jazz in every way as far as having historic genius recordings, small combo vs. big band, acoustic vs. electric. Add into the mix the cultural input from the various Latin countries and it just continues to expand. I truthfully could go on and on and not begin to skim the surface. I'll spare you!

The recording that I would unhesitatingly recommend, that I love, that others might not be familiar with would be Paquito D'Rivera & Arturo Sandoval - 'Reunion'. This amazing recording has so much going for it, but I especially love the history. D'Rivera & Sandoval were bandmates (along with Chucho Valdes) in the legendary Cuban band; Irakere. For those of us who were born free, it's hard to comprehend life under a communist dictatorship. I lived with a lovely Cuban lady for a number of yrs, became very tight with her family, and heard horrific tales of life in Cuba. D'Rivera defected 10 yrs prior to Sandoval being able to do so. Shortly after he did, D'Rivera joined him in Germany to make this record. We all know music has the ability to convey deep personal emotion, to me, when I hear these men soloing on THIS record, it's the joy of freedom, the re-affirmation of family, and so much more. Joining them is a (then) group of young lions that simply play their asses off! Danilo Perez, Giovanni Hidalgo, Fareed Haque, David Finck, and long-time D'Rivera bandmate (than to now) Mark Walker. The record swings SO hard and is simply timeless. The downside to this historic 'reunion' is that, for reasons we can only guess at, D'Rivera and Sandoval haven't ever recorded together again!

I just read an interview with Latin Jazz legend Jerry Gonzalez where he was told that musician/educator John Calloway has made Gonzalez and his Fort Apache Band live recording; 'Obatala', required mandatory listening in his class. Gonzales responded by saying he felt that his 'Rumba Para Monk' should be required listening. I'd say both of these records are must-haves!!

Currently I'm hoping Bobby Sanabria's 'Multiverse' Big Band record wins the Latin Jazz Grammy for a number of reasons, the primary being it's a fantastic record, but he's up against some stiff competition. Not bad for a genre that was almost eliminated by NARAS!!
Thanks! I've got some music to look forward to.

And, coincidentally, I have that Sanabria Multiverse, and for the last couple days it's been the "next" cd to go into the stereo, but I keep getting interrupted. Now I'm really looking forward to it.

Cheers.

Timeless All Stars - Timeless Heart (1983)

This record is easy to overlook. Don't be fooled by the generic band name and nondescript album cover. I think this one is a masterpiece. It's not a record that shouts. The music is very understated, so it didn't bowl me over at first. But now I LOVE the lyricism. Another writer described the group's music as "effortless as breathing." Anyone who enjoyed the Hutcherson/Land collaborations in the late-60s and early-70s would do well to check it out. Imagine a cross between that group and the MJQ or Jazztet -- not at all a jam session; instead the music is arranged and blended beautifully -- and that'll give you a sense of the sound here.

I'd like to recommend Chucho's Steps by Chucho Valdes & The Afro-Cuban Messengers. It's a cd I can't be away from for very long, and I've had it for 2 years! Amazing music.

I will be going to see him again on November 17 at Luckman Auditorium. I try not to miss him whenever he performs locally.

Nah Youn Sun's "Same Girl" (2010), great album by a Korean singer some may be unfamiliar with.

In blues/rock, Jon Dee Graham's "Full" (2006) is a fine album. He's not well known outside of Texas.

In classical music, I think Miklós Rózsa's violin concerto is a relatively well kept secret.

Yes, as a native Texan, I've heard of Jon Graham.

I'm going to have to check out the Korean singer.
