How do other sax/brass players feel about coloured lacquered instruments.

Personally don't like it. Don't think it makes any difference to the sound, but it just doesn't seem "right". Daft? well yeah of course it is, but to me an instrument is a means of expression not of decoration

Personally not a fan of those. I generally do like a bit of eccentricity in other people, but I think those coloured horns are like for the extrovert kind, which I'm not. As for the expression vs. decoration point, I don't see an issue really. In the end, every instrument has a shape and a colour, and we all favour the things that look beautiful generally speaking, I mean I wouldn't choose to play an ugly horn so as to avoid any decorative aspects to it.

thanks, man. Yeah lots of mileage on my Bach.I am playing monette mouthpieces on it now ( love them! ).

Cheers, pal. My horn is now missing much of the original lacquer, but I actually bought it brand new more than 10 years ago now.

Actually, this is one of my more recent creations. I took a bicycle wheel, ripped all the spokes off and stretched some heavy-duty plastic tarp over it for the drum head. For the shell, I just found a cheap plastic wash tub and fastened the head over it with some twine. I can adjust the tension with one hand as I play it, so the result is kind of a hybrid bass drum/kettle drum sound. Nice and boomy!

Unfortunately, we lost Mr. Harley a few years ago. Can't help but love the guy.

I am surprised and impressed.
